Has anyone ever heard of a Bayard side by side? Are they of good quality? Would it hold up to a .405 Winchester? I can't find much info on them online.I found one locally here in WY for my DR project. It has double underlugs, a greener crossbolt, and side clips. Other than the guy wanting way too much money for it, it looks like a great "builder". I would appreciate any thoughts. Thank you.

I took two pics with my cell phone the last time I looked at it. I will try to figure out how to get them on here. I didn't get any pics of the proof marks though. It did look fairly well made though. I also seemed like it was a little more trim than most 12 gauge guns.

Thanks for posting those pics for me!!! I know they aren't that good but I took them with my phone. Does the gun look like it's worth $800? I don't think it is at all.

You said it had a Greener crossbolt, but picture doesn't look as if it does. Picture looks like a doll's head, with bite.

It does have a greener bolt. you can just barely see the locking hole. I have been told that a lot of Belgium guns are not proofed with smokeless???

The proofs will tell you what's going on with it. Print out this list of proofs and with a good magnifying glass go look it over carefully.

The guy ended up not wanting to budge on the price. I'll find another gun to build on. I'll go buy it next year when he decides he'll come down because it's still there! I have been told though that a lot of Belgium guns were not Nitro proofed? Just curious. Thanks

I "think" the whole world went to nitro at about the same time. (A bit before my time) I'd be surprised if Belgium lagged any further behind than anyone else. They did make alot of BP guns back in the day but changed as needed when needed like everyone else.
I'd take that rumor with a grain of salt and look at the proof marks.

Anybody ever hear of a Dumoulin ? I understand they were built in Belgium and imported for Sears and others. How does the quality compare to German guns? The gun I' looking at has all the goodies.

Metalguy, Some of the Dumoulins had sideclips, Greener crossbolts, and firingpin bushings, these were generally good quality and can be used for conversions. If you look carefully, you might find one with all the above features plus a cheekpiece. That will make your conversion look more like a rifle if you don't restock it. The restocking is one of the hardest chores. Bob H.

It has all of those features, and very good looking wood. It was so cheap because one of the barrels was bulged halfway down. I ultimately decided against buying it because I couldn't find any info about them. I ended up buying a SAUER 12 gauge (new post in this forum). I can't wait tostart working on it!
