HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- Montana wildlife commissioners approved a plan Thursday that aims to reduce the gray wolf population for the first time since the once-endangered animal was reintroduced to the region 15 years ago.

The proposal approved by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission calls for at least doubling the number of wolves that hunters can kill and introducing an archery season to go with the rifle season.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- Montana wildlife regulators have set this year's wolf-hunt quota at 186, more than doubling last year's quota, with the aim of reducing the state's wolf population for the first time since they were reintroduced to the Northern Rockies in 1995.

186 WOW! Sounds normal for politics when wolves are concerned. Introducing an 'extra' archery season for them is lip service only - it 'looks' like they are taking it seriously - owever wolves are one of the most difficult animals to get a shot at with a rifle, let alone a bow.

I guess I sound a bit negative - but I've been through all what's going on in those Western States concerning wolves a couple times now - you cannot 'regulate' their population with hunting seasons.

Here, EVERY resident holder of a general hunting licence can legally shoot 3 wolves a year. That would be like saying there is a Provincial bag limit of 20,000 wolves this year - perhaps 10 of those hunters will see 1 wolf this year and maybe 2 hunters will get shots at it. Setting arbitrary numbers for 'control' just doesn't work. Sure as hell doesn't work here.

The ranchers out working their land are the people who see the most wolves - and - rightfully so, they need to put some lead into as many as possible - doesn't matter where - the others will kill them - that's nature - yet shooting every one they see - won't 'reduce' the pack numbers one bit. Shooting such an elusive animal is not an effective method of controlling their population. It just doens't work. Much might depend on topography, though, however I still believe the biggest blunder so far, was transplanting BC wolves in the States. DUMB - in a BIG way.

Right on, Daryl.

The wolf is a disease organism no different than small pox.

The wolf should be eradicated in any area where man exists, or brought to extinction if I had my way, with maybe a few kept in a zoo for scientific study or pen-raised for their pelts.
