A-5744. 450 3-1/4" NE. Reduced loads

All,

Johan Loubser was kind enough to supply this information
on using his A-5744 powder for reduced loads in the
.450 Nitro x 3 1/4". I asked because I felt it would be
good for deer and such sized game.

Feel free to use the data as you think best.

From:"Johan Loubser" <johan@ramshot.com>

We suggest the following.

Caliber: .450 3Ό” NE (Nitro Express).
Barrel: 24”
Powder: Accurate -- 5744

Bullet weight: 350 grains
Low load: 46.0grains (1750 – 1850 Ft/p/sec)
Mid Range load: 56.0grains (2050 – 2150 Ft/p/sec)
Bullet weight: 400-405 grains
Low load: 44.0grains (1600 – 1700 Ft/p/sec)
Mid Range load: 53.0grains (1850 – 1950 Ft/p/sec)

NOTES:

It’ important to note that SAFETY is our prime concern therefore we strongly recommend.

1. TO ALWAYS BEGIN LOADING AT THE RECOMMENDED MINIMUM “START” LOAD and develop loads in 2% increments towards the MAXIMUM load.

2. If at all possible, measure the velocity and correlate with our data.

The latest (3rd) edition of G Wright's book has many Nitro for Black loads for the 450BPE. Why shouldn't these be considered reduced loads for the 450 Nitro Express?

Bob,

I am certainly considering NFB from Wright's new edition.
I like the fact that he has pressure data in there too.
Just was interested in what others have found workable
in their rifles.

I use 48grs of 5744 in my Searcy and Ruger 450/400s with 210 gr Honady .41 mag bullets with good results on deer and pigs so far.
