.257 Weatherby Magnum Details.
      #143576 - 13/10/09 08:45 AM

G'Day Fella's,

While we are on the Weatherby line of cartridges, I hope you don't mind me asking for your Experience and any Reloading Data that you blokes might have, on the .257 WM?
eg; Is IMR 7828, The Best Powder, for reloading this cartridge?
eg; Minimum Barrel length etc, etc

As some of you may already be aware, I would like to build up a .257 on a Single Shot, Falling Block Action.
So I would appreciate any opinions you may have on Chamber Dimensions like, is Free Bore really needed (Yes/No) etc.

Any personal experience that you might have with this cartridge would be greatly appreciated.

Hommer

This is one of my all time favorite cartridges..and have reloaded and shot them off and on for the past 15 years..personally think it is one of the best offerings from Weatherby..

Currently I have 2--both built on Remington actions..one on a titanium with a #2 contour Hart barrel--with a 4-14 Leupold scope--weighs 7 lbs total--the other is a standard stainless action with a #3 hart barrel---both will shoot 1/2" at 100yds...use the titanium a LOT for hunting deer, elk and bear climbing around in the mountains...use the other for antelope..while it is a bit light for elk, IMHO, have never had ANY game animal get away with this caliber..again, shot plaement is everything as in all calibers..

In my experience, it hits a lot harder than one might expect --sure it is due to the velocity..have used 4831, RL-22, RL-25 and H1000...all with Fed 215 primers--currently shooting Barnes Triple Shocks in 100 gr--velocity is right at 3700 fps...have loaded them all the way to 3840 and down to 3500--but the speed now seems to shoot really well..have also used Nosler ballistic tips, which I would only recommend on light game as the velocity is too much for that bullet..works nice on our pronghorns over here...

Load right now with the Barnes is H1000--Fed 215 Primers, Weatherby case..100gr Barnes Triple shocks..

Need or want any addl info let me know--

I attached a couple of muley's taken with the .257 in the past few years..

Thanks

Ripp

G'Day Fella's,

Jeff and Jerry, Thank You for the web sites, I will go and have a gander at them, in a tick.
Ripp, Thank You also for your personal experience and load data for this cartridge. Bloody Nice Mule Deer Ripp, well done!!!

I've been shooting my poor old .25-06 (Rem 700 BDL) for the last 30 years and a good mate of mine (Toofa) keeps pestering me about wanting to buy it off me (Years ago now, I once watched Toofa shoot a Fallow Deer from the door of his Hut with this 25-06. The Deer only went 2 feet after the shot and that was Down! He hasn't stopped pestering since!). Whilst this rifle and I have had a fair bit of fun over the years, it will still put 5 x 100 gr B/Tips and Barnes X (@ 3350 fps) into 1/2" to 5/8" at 100 yds. But I may weaken, some time soon?
I have been wanting to get one of the new Rem 700 CDL stainless/wood in 257 Weatherby but I missed out on one earlier this year, that was quite a bit cheaper than usual. So I have decided to build one up on a recently made Browning 1895 falling block action (and if a 700 CDL comes along at the right price, I'll have it to!). I also Had an As New (and heavy), Weatherby Mk V in 257 but sold it 8 months ago (though I kept the Redding Die set), as I prefer my bolt rifles to be Remington's.

Ripp, if you don't mind me asking, what are the Barrel Lengths on your .257's?

Thanks for all your advice on powder choice etc for use with this cartridge as it isn't a very common caliber in Australia, God only knows why???

Jeff and Jerry, I just checked out the two websites that you recommended, Thank You they are fantastic!

Ripp, even though I don't reload, I agree with your choice! The .257 is one of my calibers, along with the .340. Your trophies with that caliber are outstanding!

Hommer, my .257 wears a 26" barrel and I think any .257 should have nothing shorter than that. That's my opinion. Regardless of all of the shop talk, a 26" barrel carries no differently than one 2 inches shorter.

I only use 26"--and as stated above--you need that to get the velocity out of the Weatherby caliber--if you use a shorter barrel--say 24" --you are almost as well off just using a 25-06..as the difference in velocity would only be about 150fps..

Has anyone tried this cartridge in the R93 platform?

With its 25 3/4 inch barrel it should be capable of wringing the best out of the round in a more compact unit. A 26 inch barrel may carry no different to a 24 inch barrel but a 5 inch shorter action tends to shift the balance.

RIPP;

Good grief, would you leave a nice one out there to procreate??

Really, I have never heard a bad thing said about this caliber. I think part of the reason is that the fellows that shoot it, no BS here, generally know what it can do and shoot good bullets and are good shooters and shoot it within its limitations. It is not a "Walmart"-special.

Interesting observation - back in the 70's, I had a '98 Mauser actioned .257 AckImp (Robert's case blown out) 26" McGowen bl. My favourite load for it was XXgr. IMR4350, 100gr. Nosler Partition for 3,484fps. Moose and deer, no problem - Hammer of Thor with double lung shots. Chrongraphing some loads one day at the range and a fellow showed up with a .257 WTBY on a BRNO ZKK600(or 601) with a 24" bl. He had to use a piece of 2x4 to hammer the bolt open as he presures were way over the top, using a load straight out of the old #45 Lyman book, I think he used then. He also had loaded the 100gr. Nosler Partitions, using, I think 68gr. IMR4350 for - now get this, a too-hot a load for his rifle and only 3,482fps average.
I wasn't impressed with the big fat case - that was my first and only experience with a .257 WTBY. Obviously, along with the 24" bl. he had a slow barrel that wouldn't handle book OR factory loads. Sometimes that happens.
Ripp's TSX load would be increadible for not only deer, but long range elk as well - for a good shot, that is. I've a buddy an incredible game shot, who uses a slow .25/06 with 115gr. Nosler Partitions @ around 2,920fps for bull elk - 1 shot, one elk, every year.

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for all your useful input, very much appreciated!

Daryl FYI, the BRNO would probably have been a ZKK-600 (30-06 length magazine).
The ZKK-601 is 308 length and the ZKK-602 is the .375 H&H Mag length.

Cingiale, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
I hope all's well with you and your preparation for the Big Day!
Yeah, I've wanted a proper .257 Weatherby Mag for some time now.

That "procreate" stuff is what got most of these guys hanging on my wall..

Actually watched some boys hunting mules on TV this weekend--southeast Idaho that is..made me think of you..they did mention the effect wolves have had on game in our states which surprised me as most seem to want to walk that fine rope of political correctness...you know 9.3..the same rope you and I are on...

G'Day Fella's,

Mbogo3, thanks for the tip on reforming 7mm brass and powder choices for the 257 WM.

Since I originally posted this, an old mate of mine gave me 5 x Boxes (100) rounds of 1956 vintage Norma loaded, Weatherby factory ammo for doing him a small favor!
So I think I have the ammo side of things sorted out (unless the case necks split, on first firing)?

Thanks to all on this subject!

Have found this thread very interesting. Thanks to all.
Whilst I have only recently managed to fill a long held desire with the purchase of a 257RobImp, I also have been thinking of a 257WM. For my part I think the 25 to 26 cal range are pretty well spot on for the bulk of Auatralian hunting needs. As such I was thinking of building a 257WM on a Ruger No1B in 25-06 and just having the chamber re-cut. The Ruger comes with a 26" bbl already and it would be a cheaper option than building up a rifle from scratch.

Interesting tip re: the 7mm Rem Mag cases.

Ok, Ok, 257 this and that.

Here's one for you all.

I've got a chance to go after leopard in ZA come Aug. 2 this year. I've got to scramble like a rabid squirrel to raise money.

Anyone here interested in a big, shiny, gawdaceous Weatherby Mk V in .257?

I have no idea as to price, etc.

Let me describe, and if you'd be so kind as to estimate value, I'll thank you nicely.

W'by .257. Leupold 3.5-10. About 20 rounds through it whilst breaking in the bbl properly. Looks new. I've got it down to sub-MOA at 200 yards.

Boy, is it obvious and shiny. Built in CA year before last. Only been to a range.

I've spent over $2.3k to get it up and dancing. However, I need airfare and trophy fee for the hunt.

So, are you up for throwing out a value?

Thankee quite kindly,

Tom Murphy
Las Vegas, NV
