Rem/Baikal 45-70 Ammo Question
      #143357 - 09/10/09 04:15 AM

Greetings to all, been gone for quite sometime but back home again, just in time for deer season.
The Remington 45-70 side by side that I have is sighted in with the green box Remington 405 grain. Does a good job as is but I have been reading about the Hornady Leverloution Ammo. Has anyone tried it in the Remington Rifles? If so what type of results did you get? I called Hornandy yesterday and asked about this specific load regarding pressure and the gentlemen I spoke with said they (Hornandy Staff I guess) had shot it in Trapdoors without any problem. I don't know enough about trapdoors to make an informed decision. Thanks in advance, Great to be home!

Respectfully
wcf

Just ask Hornady about the pressure it's loaded to. They'll know. If it's standard SAAMI 28,000 CUP, it will be fine. These rifles are CIP proved for the standard SAAMI/CIP .45/70 load, which CIP marks as 2200 BAR/31,900 PSI.

I have only tried the 405's in mine. However, I asked this question of Hornady a few weeks back and they advised the LEVERevolution ammo was within SAAMI specs for the trapdoor and the Baikal double. Only bad thing I have heard is it gives the shooter a pretty good wack, well more than the 405's.

Has anybody chronographed the Hornady load?

The Hornady ammo is not suitable for elk or moose. While it will work fine on broadside shots, it lacks stiff enough jackets for deep penetration. I am merely repeating what a friend found last year in Terrace, BC, on moose. The bullet hit a rib going in, blew the lungs up, which worked fine, but didn't even make it through the off side rib cage. It's a bit soft - stick with 405 RP or 400gr. Speer bullets at about 1,700 to 1,800 fps and you'll have complete success. You don't need more speed than that, although at 31,000FPI - you can achieve close to 2,000fps.
A Hornady 350gr. RN is a super deer, moose and elk bullet, if driven around 1,900fps. This has been my experience with that Hornady bullet. RP 405's are very accurate, excellent hunting bullets if not driven over about 1,850fps and allow seating out and crimping in the rear groove (if the chamber allows), which normally increases accuracy and case capacity, which allows loading to the same velocity at slightly reduced pressure, if that's important to you.

Thanks to all for your insight, after much research and the fact that the Baikal shoots the green box remingtons so well I think I will stay with the status quo.

Hi WCF I have the baikal sxs 45/70 and have used 10 or so box's of leverloutions in mine and they shoot quite well and are fine on fallow deer. I load 350gr RN hornadys 49gr of AR2207 for 2040fps for my home load and use these on sambar, my home load just hapens to group in the same place. Both my home load and the leverloutions get your attention as the rifle is only 6 1/2 pounds.I also have some 400gr speers and some 405gr remingtons that I will load later, I will try for about 1900fps. On barrels of my rifle it is stamped maximum operating pressure 2200MAR or 31900HST this is not trapdoor loads in fact it is marlin loads.

That's not quite true. The rifle is made is Russia, which is a CIP member state, so CIP Proof standards are a matter of law there. The markings on your rifle are for CIP's standard pressure for .45/70 - 2200 BAR/31,900 PSI. This is essentially the same as SAAMI's standard 28,000 CUP. CIP's and SAAMI's protocol's are entirely different, thus different numbers for the same pressure. Marlin loads take it up to 40,000 CUP, which is beyond the proof pressure of this rifle.
