      #142839 - 29/09/09 02:33 AM

Hey guys
Check out this hog killed by my old man with his itsy bitsy old .222 rem, loaded with barnes x tripple shock 55 grain bullets!

shot went clean through both shoulders, breaking bones on both!

The youngster is my son, making this a three generation hunt!

It is good to see 3 generations on a Hunt. As for the .222Rem I love the calibre and use it regularly. The calibre is widely used here in Australia but normally for foxes and roos and although it has been used on pigs, goats etc with success, some of the old boars need a larger pill for the safety of the hunter and a humane dispatchment of these ferals, (Can't upset the animal libbers )where the .243 is considered a minimum.

Cheers from Australia,

Jeff

My father purchased the .222 nearly 40 years ago! He actually was keen on a .243 win, but a know it all gunshop attendant persuaded him to buy this rifle! he has shot numerous bushbuck and bushpig with it (never knew he was going anything "wrong" cos nobody ever told him it was not suitable for those game!) Our local gun mags have for the past ten years or so often pronounced the centre fire .22's as unsuitable for anything heavier than duiker or steenbuck. My dad reckoned it was too late in his life to worry about buying a new rifle, so I bought him some Barnes X and loaded them for him. His best day was three warthog in one day with one shot a piece! All the bullets exited on side on shots!

I have recovered one bullet from a hog he has shot - he hit it at about forty yards and it then ran past him and he hit again at about 30 yards diagonally from the back.

first round exited - good wound channel through lungs!
second round broke ribs, went diagonally through lungs, and then smashed ribs on far side, but then deflected and lodged in shoulder - weight retention was 100%, although weirdly, one petal was broken off, but lying right next to remainder of bullet!

The old guy does not take shots over 120 yards!

This clearly shows that when one knows what to do and takes care when shooting, almost anything is possible, even with a "to small" caliber.

Nice done, and hopefully the kid will keep the tradition going.

Ick kann net Afrikaans talen, dat de Lüüt verstaan. ;-) But the Barnes X´-bullet speaks its own distinctive language from the Triple Deuce. Until recently I had Brno Fox, which I used on roe deer here in Sweden. That combination was infallible, and I never recovered a single 50-grainer, as they always exited, after having bagged these small deer defintely. Sometimes I miss that little gun. However, there are X-bullets for my .22Hornet too...

I've successfully shot X's out of my 16 twist CZ - but the 50gr. was a tich too long for that twist. I chucked them up in the small lathe and cut 1/8" off the base, leaving a 41gr. "X" bullets. These, driven by 13.3gr. Lil'Gun in the CZ or Ruger only, run right around 3,250fps and shot into just under .5" for 5 at 100 meters off the bags. I've not had to opportunity to use them on deer, moose or bear, but you just never know. Living in game-rich territory helps.

Fortunately my old man's rifle has no problems with the 53 grainer!

I would love to try out the relatively new 60 and 70 grainers, but those would probably not stabilise, and they would start to intrude too much into the case, reducing powder capacity!

I do not load these for maximum velocity, as some interesting research reported in the Man Magnum magazine showed better bullet performance from the barnes X when velocities were reduced!

Test rifles were a .22 hornet and a .22-250, and a .308 and a 30-06.
In both calibres, the lower powered rifles showed better penetration on game!

The author made a few possible explanations for this apparent anamolly!
firstly, the slower bullet has more time for the petals of the barnes x to slice through tissue, thus allowing it to work better. Also, he suggested that the higher velocity bullets petals became folded flat due to the velocity, and thus could not work as cutters!

I have to add that this research involved the shooting of many many impala and warthog over an extended period (numbers in the hundreds) and so gives a pretty good reflection of whats what!

Of course, one has to take into account the range that you will hunt at!
If most game is to be shot close (bushveld) then load down, but if shots will mostly be long (karoo, etc), then push the veocity, as it would have dropped by the time it reaches the target!

Wow, my bad.

I looked at the pic quickly and with its face in the grass thought it was a skinny bushpig!

This is another example of advances in technology taking time to sink in for the most of us. Back in the day of caliber reduction and the introduction of smokeless powder, it took a while, too.

The mono bullets certainly have their place, and I seriously wonder if the .22's are the caliber that is best improved by them.

A light, shortbarreled, quick twist {1/7} .22-250 would make a splendid deer rifle I do believe, shooting the heavier, longer X's.

Yup - I think that the seventy grainers would work very nicely in the .22-250, and even the .220 swift, but loading appropriately for the expected range - top loads if shooting at 200 metres plus - reduced loads for shorter ranges!
