So archers, what kind of new gear are you aquiring for this season? See anything new that looks worth while? How about some old standbys?

I just stocked up on some more Steelforce broadheads.

Ann,i've never used a bow and arrow for hunting though i'm sure it must be tremendously exciting.One day,perhaps in the near future i'll come down to Michigan and hunt with you.You will have to teach me how to use it though.

How do you like the steelforce broadheads? I may try them on elk this fall.

I will most likely get a new bow sight ..........not sure which one. I have also been toying with the idea of making myown. I can't find exactly what I am looking for from a major manufacturer. I want a VERY durable, vertical pin ight with (3) fiberoptics in all steel contruction with a level bubble to prevent canting. I have an HHA model that is CLOSE but it has finger adjustable knobs to change elevation. These tend to become loose with use. I have been melting wax on them before hunts to keep them from slipping. The adjustments are steel but they go through a clear plastic sleeve that surrounds the sight that protects the pins. Lock tite would melt this and ruin any cahnce of future adjustant. Not ideal for out of state hunts.

I am also loking for a good arrow rest to use with my carbon arrows. I shoot healical fleching to stabalize fixed broadheads............and getting full clearance from my Quicktune 1000 is difficult. I have not decided which one to get yet. But It will NOT be a drop away. I worry about getting teh cable snagged on brush whilke chasing elk through the high country. I need durability & clearance.

Good luck to all you "new bowers" This is an addictive sport. I love firearms and own many rifles. But I take 90% of my game with a bow. I love the challenge of getting within range of a game animal by either stalking or stand hunting.

Iron Buck,

I think you should try a Whisker Biscuit. I have used one for a few years now and absolutely love it. As far as your helical fletching, I really don't think it makes a difference in arrow flight with broadheads. You might try some arrows with straight fletches, that's all I use and I kill plenty of game.

I only shoot broadheads, usually my Muzzy practrice heads and swith to sharps when hunting. Even using the Muzzy's before adding the Steelforce heads does not seem to be an issue. Again, non helical fletching.

Last year I killed my buck and three warthogs with the Steelforce heads. I had pass throughs on all of them and my bow is maxed at 65.5 pounds. Ribs on both sides of the deer were shattered. Killed bison with the Muzzy's, they busted through the first rib and stick into the shoulder/arm bone on the far side. No complaints with either. Hell they all work but the Steelforce seem a bit sturdier. I've never been disapointed with Muzzy either. Just like to switch up a bit. I do know I won't go to a mech head. The only thing you will find with the Steelforce is the bleeder blades may bend. They are replaceable. Also, Steelforce will sharpen the heads for free, you just ship them in. I do like that. They come out of the box sharper than Muzzy's.

I use Toxonics sights. The one I have on my current set up is a few years old, they are the typical horizontal pins and I have never had them move or loosen up. You do need a hex key for adjusting them. It has a leveler but don't really find that to be much of a help. When I do happen to look at it I find I am pretty much holding my bow straight with out really thinking about it. Just adds more weight and junk to the set up to me. I'd remove it if I could but it is welded on with some sort of epoxy.

I have found that the way I hold the bow makes the difference on whether it is level or not. I touch my index finger to my thumb and also have my middle finger resting on the index. The grip is not tights but seems to balance the bow just right. It may be that you have a lot of stuff on your bow which unbalances it? I do not hunt with the quiver on. Makes a difference for me.

I have been considering the whisker biscuit. What have you experienced regarding fletching wear? The other draw back that have read about concerned ice, snow & ice buildup.........have you used it in these conditions? Reliablility is critical for me. There is no room for error in extreme conditions bowhunting LOL. I do not want to have problems at 12,000 feet in the mniddle of nowhere

I really like the vertical sight pins. They are more like rifle sights & they do not hide teh sight picture of teh game animal as other sights that I've tried. The reason I like the level bubble is that I shoot a Mathews Ultramax Single cam bow. Because it is a single cam the string is angled slightly from left to right when the bow is perpendicular to the ground. I always used to level my bow ith the string and it had become autoamtic. But with a solocam it causes canting.......which throws my arrows low and to teh right if I am not careful. This becomes compounded at longer ranges like 50 & 60 yards. The level bubble solves this completely.

It is always fun to mess with the set up anyway I am always searching for the ultimate solution ...........yet I never get there! I keep changing my mind as new gear comes out!

Do you get string wear with that Matthews? Would seem like it would rub on the cam edge if it is coming out at an angle. Seems like an odd design but maybe they see something I don't? My Parker is a solo cam and the string is not angled.

Anyway, I have been shooting a Biscuit for over two years and have not lost a single fletch. I use carbon arrows which can be fussy if you do not prep them right before glueing on your vanes. Mine apparently get done right. ALWAYS put an extra bead of glue at the front of the vane where it meets the arrow shaft.

I shoot in all sorts of weather, no issues with snow or water. It gets pretty cold in my area and it has never iced up. When I killed my buck on Oct 1 last year it had been raining, cold and windy all afternoon and evening. Cold enough I was hunting in my winter gear.

The Mathews system works quitewell and has been proven over the years. String wear is no different than any of my previous bows. The off set is very slight........and is only done to keep the cams centered in the limbs. It is a high performance cam. I get 276fps with my hunting set up. At the edge of control for fixed broadheads

The old WB is looking good. I may pick one up this summer. I think it would make a great hunting rest. Especially when chasing elk through the high country! No worries with the arrow falling off the rest.

Does anyone know if any of these are any good?

I bought some Gold Tip Precision Broadheads / Centurion. They are a hardened steel chisel point (I am reading the packet) with three small razor blade type blades that slot in and are tightened with a lock nut behind.

Was told they give the same flight characteritics as a target point for longer range shooting. Was told to reserve them for deer etc and also bought a lot of crappy carbon steel two blade points for pigs, goats, giant grasshoppers etc. Good advice as I will probably hit more rocks than flesh.

Also bought as a package deal a Martin "Jaguar" bow with "ultra-cam" (whatever that is?). Weight 50 to 65lbs. Not a large compound but maybe a good starter.

The package also included the bow quiver, five arrows, a site etc. Bought in addition about thirty carbon arrows and as many crappy broadheads and a few of the Gold Tip "Centurions".

Hopefully will do an OK job and if I outgrow it will sell it and try another.

John,

Martin makes a nice bow. This should be a good piece. Maybe you could even get your wife to shoot it. Set the poundage down as far as it will go and get her out there in front of a target.

I don't know anything about Gold Tip. I have heard of them and that is about it.

Martin makes great bows. I have a buddy that shoots competatively with a Martin Fury. He hunts with the same bow and has killed mule deer at 50 yards with it! He is of course a hell of a shot. While I am not familiar with your particular model I am sure it is a quality bow. Martin is a great company

John, Are the Goldtip broadheads older? I looked through several catalogs I have and was unable to find them. Have you mounted them on arrows and spin tested them to see if they are true? If they spin true.........with no wobble........and the blades are sharp they should work fine.
