I picked up one of these recently and got back into reloading for the 8x57 again. I really like the laminated stock and the all round look of the rifle. Although being an RC rifle, it still retains the eagles and swastikas. This 8mm is very accurate with all bullet weights I have loaded for it so far. I will be retiring(for a while) the scoped 06 and packing the 8mm for deer this season and using the original iron sights. I had thought about making a sporter of it, but after firing it, I couldn't bring myself to carve the old girl up.
458SHOOTER, I understand your attraction to the 8x57. I have a nice collection of Mauser military rifles from around the world. Most are 8x57 and all shoot very well. The 8 in many configurations. Carbine, short rifle, long rifle. 1888, 1893, 1898, 1905, 1922 and 1924 versions in 8mm. Plus the K98 of WWII. The other Mauser calibers are also impressive. 7.65, 7mm and 6.5's. I have shot iron sight groups of minute of angle with all 4 calibers in full military configuration rifles. I also like hunting with my 11.17x 60 1871 and 71/84. Don't cut up a nice one. there are plenty out there with messed up stocks that are great sporter candidates.
