That is a lovely stag 93mouse. Do you know how old he was?

Stag was middle aged - 5-6 y.o.

Is that the average age of the stags taken? How much do the stags improve in antler growth at say 8-9 years of age compared to a 5-6 year old.

We have a set quota of stags that should be taken according to their age: 40% 2-4 y.o., 40% 5-9 y.o. and 20% 10+ y.o.

On growth - stags reach their trophy peak between 10th and 12th year - growth can be quite considerable - while antlers grow a bit longer each year (the shape usually remains the same) the main difference is in mass - perspective stag can even double the mass of the antlers between 5th and 12th year.

For comparison how much a trophy can gain in a single year - 2 pairs from the same stag - inner pair is from previous year:

Very interesting.

Of the 2-4 year olds is any consideration given to taking out inferior or cull animals, for that matter right through the age curve, or is it just 40% of the stags of that age group.

Indeed so - it is applied on both 2-4 and 5-9 class - here is a part of 2006 red stags taken - if you look under the trophies there are letters A - perspective (non-shootable) and B - non perspective (shootable) trophy:

Once the stag reaches 10 years it is open without restrictions - some examples from 2006:

12 y.o.:

11 y.o.:

13 y.o.

13 y.o. - wolves got that one:

Thankyou for answering my questions 93mouse. It's obvious by the photos that your management principles produce results.

Out of curiosity, how long was the stag in your initial post?

GREAT post 93!

I have one on the wall {elk/wapiti} above me a lot like the one just shot.

Few here have anything like the bulbs that your red deer develop but the body size of our elk appear bigger on average than the one in the first picture. IIRC, red deer {hirsch, stag, hjort} do indeed go a bit smaller in body size.

You have a very good thing going there.

On a side note, most hunting here is done by individuals or small groups and even when done in groups is relatively haphazard. Hunting is an individual thing in many ways here. There it appears, as often in Europe and elsewhere, that hunting is done among larger groups of people.

Can you tell us how many are in your "club"/"team" and what the success rate would be? Here, traditionally, success rates for hunters hunting elk runs about 30-33 percent, meaning in the course of ten years the "average" hunter kills about 3 elk*. What would it be there?

Also, are your hunters required to leave their trophies at the clubhouse/lodge or do they take them home?

As usual, 93, very interesting post. We look forward to seeing more!

* I note "traditionally" because success rates are predicted to plummet this year due to devastating damage to herds by wolves. Game commissioner I spoke to the other day says in the area he hunts they are not even seeing elk, much less nice bulls. Unless radical change occurs, our traditions, customs and heritage are destroyed. If I remember correctly, you fellows manage all predators including wolves there.

Our society counts 60 members and we hunt 6000 hectares - however from those 60 only 15 or 20 hunt actively - this year we have a quota of 6 trophy stags. You are permitted only 1 stag/year - it should be a B class (above 10 y.o. stag is an auto B class). Things happen and if you end up shooting A class, you get a personal 3 year ban on stag hunting (inner society agreement). We try to be mutual, so if you shoot a stag one year you restrain yourself during the next year season so others can have a go at it and only jump in if quota is not achieved in closing stage of the season. So it is hard to evaluate succes rate - if you are capable to hold out for 14 days of hard hunting during the rut you have prety good chances of getting one - depends on others of course - with every stag shot your chances are narrover, especialy if the only stag remaining is the one that should be over 10 y.o. - those are realy hard to get - A and B classes are more inner agreement, however age class set quota is State based so a local society is bounded to fullfilment with all the penalties that come along. If you shoot a stag above the age restricted quota - the whole society will hunt one less next year...same goes if you fail to achieve quota etc. Bit tricky, but the fact that we will achieve our quota in 14 days (more or less) is quite talkative.

Very interesting.

How do you hunt? Do you drive stag, or call using bugle or cow calls, or stalk in woods? What method do you use?

Mainly stalking, waiting and calling in rut - later if quota remains we also drive them (have in mind that 6 stags mean that additional ~ 24 non trophy - hinds and calves are to be taken) - that would be in November and December.
