Building DOUBLE RIFLES on Shotgun Actions 2nd Edition
      #141224 - 27/08/09 02:08 PM

I have the first edition of W Ellis Brown's book... lots of good info, but special tool diagrams and technical data were a bit unfinished IMO.

I've noticed he has released a 2nd Edition now.

Anyone looked at it?
Or know what has changed between the two editions?
All I can find on his site is that it gained quite a few pages now 219pp and has 300+ photos or illustrations... some now in colour!

I have both copies and the 2nd Edition is not much more informative than the first one. The new one does have a chapter on bringing barrels back On Face. There are a few new diagrams on how to do certian procedures such as regulating and soldering. The end of the book has some new pictures of people that have built rifles using his books, along with some hunting pictures. It is a somewhat improved version but I was disappointed that he still doesn't give out some very crucial information such as how to figure out what the barrel tapers need to be, etc. The numbered pages only go up to 206. Is it worth buying? I don't know, I bought one with hopes of gaining alot of new information but I was disappointed in it. He has the same problem as many other authors, he knows his stuff but he tends to forget that those of us just beginning, need all the basic info too. He skips over a lot of the basics because they are second nature to him. I would hate to try and build a rifle with just the information in either book. As they say though, his is the only game in town. Bob H.

I took Tech. College class, in MN, from W. Ellis Brown on this very subject, prior to his writing first edition of book on this subject, and have made many such conversions with great success. I think that he intends book to be more for somewhat experienced gunsmiths or machinists, rather than for beginners or those thinking that they might make such conversion work in their garage over the week-end. That is my opinion, and I could be wrong. Mr. Brown is a very nice, well meaning enthusiastic guy, and I found his books to be very good, but, of course, not for someone who knows nothing about such work.

Jack,
You are right, Mr. Brown is a nice guy, well informed, and he has helped me out in the past. I do feel his books are good as far as they go, but I think he kind of missed the boat on the second edition. I would have liked to see things included such as how to figure out the balance and over all weight of a new rifle in advance. Regulating tricks, of which there are many, that were not included. I'm also sure that during the intervening years between the two books that he has come up with new and better methods that weren't included.
I guess my main complaint is that through the title " Building Double Rifles on Shotgun Actions", he leads us to believe that this book will tell you how to do exactly that, but then inside he has the disclaimer that this is more for entertainment and not meant to be a "How to Guide".
My belief is that if he is going to get people all worked up about building double rifles then he should go ahead and make it the best "How to Book" that he can. It seems to me that in some areas, he gives us just enough infomation to get us started but not enough to keep us out of trouble. I did not go to gunsmithing school, I could not afford it at the time, but I have worked on guns for over forty years and have learned many things from my gunsmith friends who were good enough to help me out. If it hadn't been for them, I might have gotten myself into trouble right off the bat. Even though I didn't go to gunsmith school, I have still managed to convert eight shotguns into useable, nice looking rifles. And I did it in my shop which is in a converted garage.
As a final thought, I feel we all own a debt of thanks to Mr. Ellis Brown for opening up this subject and informing many people who now have successfully made rifle conversions on shotguns.
Bob H.

Mr. Brown lives just up the road from me, and is a great guy. Certainly worth the money to buy his book. He has helped me on many projects.
