333 jeffrey?
      #141178 - 26/08/09 05:25 PM

Recently came accross an old double in India, probably assembled by Mantons. The barrel has "Made In Germany" stamped at the top while on the underside near the chambers is stamped "GUSSSTAHL KRUP ESSEN 8.3mm 62 1/2, stm G. N 19g". There are no other markings on the rifle. I have yet to take a chamber cast but my guess is that it is a Jeffery 333 calibrated for the 300 grain bullet. Any help?
Shikari

Can't help with the rifle but welcome to Nitro Express Forum. Personally I love the .333 Calibre, and you've found one in a double ! Any chance of some photos ?

This may be a statement of sacrosanct violation, but I've long thought that a longer barreled double in .338 Win. Mag. would make for a very useful rifle for North American hunting. A .333 Jeffrey, a "true" .33 caliber, would be very nice indeed.

Finally figured out what those German Proof marks mean with help from the German Gun Collectors Association. It is chambered for the .333 jeffrey flanged and the barrels/ sights are calibrated for 300 grain full steel jacket bullet.Thats what stm G N 19g mean. The double probably dates to around 1920. The barrels are very good but the exterior especially the underside below the forend shows some pitting. Much of the engraving also needs deepening, is it possible to restore that?
With 300 grain bullets the 333 jeffrey double would be hard to beat. Its mild recoil with adequate punch as compared to the 338 mag makes it a winner always.
