Attention Kalispell MT
      #141093 - 25/08/09 07:37 AM

About three years ago I sent a BRNO ZKK 602 to a gunsmith named Fred Zeglin, doing business as Z-Hat Custom Guns, Casper, WY for the purpose of having it rebarrelled in .500 Jeffery. Things had progressed in a leisurely fashion until this January, when I was informed that the barrel had been installed and some dummy rounds were needed to correct feed. I duly supplied the rounds, and have heard nothing since, despite numerous e-mails and phone calls. The last phone call to his number revealed that the number was no longer in service. Mr. Zeglin has my gun and $700 I had paid for work in progress.

Mr. Zeglin also operates a chamber reamer rental service called 4D Reamer Rentals, and a glance at their web site revealed that the business had been relocated to Kalispell, MT. The precise address given for returning reamers is 4D Reamer Rentals, 432 East Idaho St.,Suite C420, Kalispell, MT. 59901. A call to that location revealed that Mr. Zeglin's new number is (406)752-4090. Calls to that number produced no answer.

I am wondering if a participant in this forum who lives in the Kalispell area, or might be visiting in Kalispell, would be good enough to determine whether Mr. Zeglin has in fact relocated there, and if so, whether it would be worth my while to make a side trip to Kalispell from my projected trip to Missoula early next month. I really would like to see that particular rifle again.

Just following Mr. Zeglin's advice. The following is an excerpt from his web site:

"Why no Phone #? Simple really, we specialize in building custom hunting rifles. Over the past few years the shear volume of calls has increased to the point that it prevented us from getting any work finished on a timely basis. All Time estimates are just that "estimated" and are subject to change without notice. We have a long list of clients waiting for jobs and we endeavor to finish all jobs in the order received and as quickly as possible, considering all work is done by a real gunsmith with only two hands. We are available via email and if you provide your phone # we will call you when the job is near completion. Bottom line, we want to get your custom gun back to you as soon as possible and this system works best to accomplish that goal. Deposits are none refundable.

Nasty business notes required here by clients who lack patience: While we make every effort to set and meet delivery dates we do not control the entire world, although my teenage son has a plan to take it over. We try to spend more time in the shop and less time on the phone, so that you can have your new toy back ASAP. Delivery dates should not be construed as a guarantee. Some clients seem to think they are the sole residents of this universe, and my son will handle them when he takes over. Anyway, if you communicate with me in a kind and cordial manner you will gain my respect and admiration, if you choose the other obvious route, you will not impress me or your girlfriend/wife as she has you figured out already. In short, remember what Momma said, "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar!"

Finally for those of you who want to have an excuse to say the words, "My Lawyer said" I suggest that you just make those lines up it's much cheaper. If you place an order with us and later decide that too much time has passed, this is not a reason for calling a lawyer and by placing an order with us you are agreeing that you will handle all costs for both your lawyer and mine. By the way, I hire the best, if your going to waste money I figure I should at least be sure to get the best guy to represent me. The next time one of your buddies says, "Why are there no good gunsmiths around here?" Just have him read this, it's a pretty good clue."

This is a recent addition to the text. At the time I ordered my barrel, he did list a phone number and we had a number of lengthy conversations.

Holy cow! The fellow may be talented with metal and wood, but perhaps we should all chip in to send him to the Dale Carnegie course.

Hi there--Depending on how far Fred Z. has progressed (and assuming you get your gun back--wince), I suggest having it finished in short order by Dennis Olson, in the backwater hamlet of Plains, Montana. I live in Missoula, but happily drive my projects an hour-and-a-half away to have them done both quickly and correctly, not to mention at a reasonable price. Also, if you'd like to meet up for drinks or dinner while you're in Missoula, please let me know.
Best,
Malcolm

Sorry to hear this story and I wish you luck in resolving it. Anyone with as much bluster and combativeness on his website as this guy raises all sorts of red flags for me.

When it comes to gunsmiths, I've used Griffin and Howe (Paul Chapman) or Champlin Arms with good results. The work costs more (but not a lot more) and you are assured of responsiveness and someone who will stand behind the work. Also, the name association helps with the value of the gun.

I know this is not much help in the present situation. Again, wish you the best.

The guy has probably taken on to much jobs and is under some stress from the clients, stop answering phone calls is the easy way to get some peace.

I would try an ordinary letter explaining in a good manner that you are worried about ever seeing the gun again and only need confirmation that all is ok with it, and you are expecting an answer thru an ordinary letter. I bet the other ones hunting him are using phone lines or the net.

He did some work for me a few years ago. Kind of the same deal, a long time went by, I tried not to bug him. Took right at three years to get my rifle back. He said he was sorry and mentioned being sick. Turned out well but not something I would repeat.

Latest chapter in the saga:

From: Bill Warren
Sent: Thursday, September 24, 2009 2:16 PM
To: Rifle.Builder
Subject: .500 Jeffery

Fred,

I am back from my driving trip to Oregon and disappointed that I did not get a chance to hook up with you.

I have learned from the web site that your reamer rental business has relocated to Kalispell, MT. When I called the number given, I was given the impression that you had moved your gunsmithing business there, too. It would have been easy for me to run up there from Missoula, where I stopped for a couple of days.

I don't know why you have not responded to my emails and calls, but I submit that it's not good business to treat your customers that way. I don't know if you are in some kind of financial trouble, or what the problem might be, but I can be very understanding, if you will only stay in contact.

If you cannot get the rifle to feed, don't be concerned about that. I am prepared to accept it as a single loader, if that is all you can accomplish, but I do want it back as soon as possible. I am not getting any younger, and my days of shooting big bore rifles are definitely limited.

Bill Warren

Howdy,

We are pretty well recovered from the turmoil of moving now and getting things rolling better. I will be going through all work on hand in next couple weeks. I printed a report today on outstanding jobs I have it whittled down to 10 jobs that need completion and return to clients, obviously yours is among these. When sorting jobs that were in the lock-up I saw yours it will well along toward being done so I will get you a better idea of a completion date in the next couple weeks.

I have also hired some reliable help to insure that these jobs will be completed in our usual high quality style and get us back to reasonable delivery time. I sincerely apologise for the time you have waited for this project, however the light at the end to the tunnel is visible now.
My plan is to contact all clients this week and then follow up with a more accurate delivery time ASAP. Thanks.

This guy is clearly a jackass and a moron. It makes me angry to read his lame communication and it's not even my situation.

I'd tell him to fxxx himself and demand the rifle and the $700 (with interest) back. For that money and maybe a little more you could have G&H rebarrel the rifle. If he refuses, sue him in small claims court. No excuse for that sort of behavior, even if he is the Leonardo da Vinci of firearms (which i doubt).

Good luck.

The gun site Baitshopboyz.com is in Montana and might give you additional insight.
