Single shots

Don't you guys ever get scared out of your minds when hunting dangerous or semi-dangerous animals with a single shot? I know if I was hunting a stag or even pig with a single shot I would soil my pants!!! Do you normally carry a sidearm (not an option in Australia) or a scrub rifle incase you get in a bad predicament? I have hunted with bolt actions all my life and just recently went on a hunt with a double. I just feel that if I only had one shot and I missed, the animal charged, I would want to be able to take a second shot in the next 10 minutes...

PS
This post is not ment to offend, there was a similar post about big bores in the big bore section and people got very upset because they thought the guy was insulting them.

I use a shotgun/.06 combination gun which works really well for me.I usually get a lot of practice in before going hunting. It doesn't matter if it's pigs or quail, you can usually unload/load a round as fast as you need to with a little practice.Plus, having a 12g waiting in the other barrel gives an added feeling of security.

I've never felt completely comfortable when in big bear country where the brush is thick with my singleshots, but have used more often than not in those situations. This year I've cured uneasiness and won't be taking the No.1's into the thick and nasty stuff where the big bears live.

I will, however, continue to use them in big bear country were visibility isn't so limited. I love hunting with the singleshot rifles.

I mostly hunt with single shots now, both cartridge and muzzleloader (including flintlocks). Doesn't matter to me what I'm hunting including coyotes, deer, black bear, etc. I CAN carry a handgun in some situations (and do, but not for the game ) but mostly, don't. Dogs worry me more than coyotes.

Hogs, now that's a different story. I only ever hunted them in California (near Jolon) and that was with a .44 Mag Marlin M1894. I never got charged by one but did almost get in the way of one that was running away! However, there's no hogs around here. Some folks illegally dumped some in hopes of creating hunting opportunities but they were all killed within weeks (there's no season as they aren't recognized as game animals).

I do carry a knife...
