When I was young I took a cut-priced hunt in NZ, which included some time in the Southern Alps after chamois and red deer, not that we got any.

I didn't know anything about tipping PHs in those days but the hunt organiser's son, who guided that part of the trip, admired my binoculars, saying you couldn't get those over there. He persuaded me to leave them with him on the understanding he would send the money asap. I never got any money but, in hindsight, guess that was the tip I should have offered him.

Ripp referenced the Chifuti guidelines. Thats a good starting point. If you are very pleased with the work your staff did, tip more. If you are dissatisfied, well take the reason into account and tip likewise. Remember, if trophies are thin on the ground, thats not the fault of your PH and trackers. Thats hunting!

I once had a farm manager admire my Akubra hat, and I replied "Yes they are great, aren't they!" And then put it back on my head.

When leaving later my PH burst out laughing, saying my reply was very dry and he found it very funny as the farm manager was obviously trying to get me to give it to him. Now as the farm manager had performed NO services for me, I thought he could ffff himself before I would give up my hat.

John

Apologies for going off topic for a moment, but how did you find your Akubra in the moist heat of Africa?

They're great hats but I found the humidity here made mine itch like hell and I cured it by switching to a cotton hat.

Not a problem. In Africa it hasn't been very humid when I was hunting but could be very hot - 40 deg C+.

In Oz I have hunted the Top End in late November - "suicide season" - right before the Wet with daily thunderstorms and very high humidity. The Akubra was a must.

This hunt was done late October and was getting hot and humid.

The Akubra was off for the photo but this photo shows how cool it was in late November.

Maybe it's just me then but I find a cotton hat much more comfortable.

Getting back to hunting. You surely know how to make a man jealous......... I'd love to hunt one or two of those Aussie Buffalo!

Steve, I know times change what's available but big, felt Borsalinos used to be the go in Kenya. Is the climate there that much different to the one you're hunting in?

- Paul (On my way, wearing a cotton hat)

Paul,

Most of Kenya is fairly dry like the north of Tanzania. That means felt is at least as comfortable as cotton and felt will be warmer in the cool mornings.

In places like the Zambezi Valley and the Selous, it's a lot hotter and a hell of a lot more humid and whenever I've worn felt hats in those places, they've driven me crackers.

No need to apologise for getting off the subject, we've just moved on to being gentlemen with "tipping your hat".

I use a fishos tropical hat (extra wide brim and mesh cap sides) with kepi back and a bit of scrim over the face. Bakes and Nitrox know the type.

I wouldn't recommend mesh hats/panels etc for any areas here that have tsetse flies. Unless it's VERY small mesh the bastards squeeze through and bite your scalp...... and it hurts like HELL!
