A man in the house?
      #140570 - 14/08/09 04:15 PM

Was watching the movie "Out of Africa" a couple of nights ago, and remarked the movie's unique way of indicating a man was living in the house and the house was happy.

The gun rack was near full, and ...

There was one or two double rifles in the rack!

See! A couple of double rifles means a HAPPY HOUSE!

Woo hoo!

Years ago I saw in a Doublegun Journal, an article about re-uniting Denys Finch-Hatton's double with its original case.

My wife loved that movie. When we moved to Zim for a couple of years she started saying

"I haad a house in Aafrikaa..."

Wasn't that the gun that went to a ridiculous price a few years back ?

The new owner had the case for it already and matched it up.

I doubt it will go to the same dizzy heights as it did.

I bid and was on the other end of the phone as it went crazy - best fun I have had for ages listening to it.

Great film. I was in Nairobi last summer and asked the driver to take me to the Karen Blixen house. I was the only visitor and the house was in need of repair, but you could still feel the aura of the place. Inside there were photos of the real Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, as well as Redford and Streep. The lawn and porch looked much the same and it was easy to visualize the film being shot there. The interior layout was very attractive, but photos were prohibited!

Later I went through the Rift Valley up to the game park where the flamingo scene was shot, but no flamingos. I was told they were breeding in Tanzania because of the time of year.

I'd like to know the double rifle Redford used in the film and also the bolt rifle Meryl used to shoot the charging lion (when the recoil bloodied her lip). Looked like a Westley Richards to me.

picked up a copy of Out of Africa at the airport in Nairobi and read it on the flight back. I found that the filmmakers took considerable liberties with the truth, but it made for a good film.

couldn't find any gunshops or anything of the kind in Nairobi by the way. Lots of weathered land rovers though.

John Ormiston had that rifle on his website for ages - I think he was asking £100K ! He also had the HM Stanley Winchester rifles and EM Reilly pistol that sold at Holt's recently. I would have loved that pistol...

I visited the house in the modern suburb of "Karen" in 1988 and the house at that time was in reasonable condition. Lots of tourists including some buses. I had walked half the way there after trying to use a local bus (manatu). Was dropped off on the way back because I had missed the right stop, being the side of the road somewhere/nowhere. Supposedly another bus heading in the right direction could pick me up there, but decided not to trust African timetables so walked the seven miles or so to the house. Enjoyed the gardens and the house, now part of an urban suburb but the gardens are large and the area was not closely settled. On closing hour hoped to hitchhike with some tourists back to town, but no luck and all had left. Managed to catch a matatu (local mini bus) back to the central bus station and was the only mazungu (whitey) in the bus and the school girls behind me found my non-black non-curly hair intriguing.

Incidentally Karen Blixen also uses a lot of "writer's licence" in her stories too. Some of the characters are completely fictional. But great stories non the less.

very interesting story.

In 1988, I guess the house would have still been looking freshly renovated from the film in 1985. I would love to have seen it then.

Better still of course to have seen it in 1915 with the 6000 acre coffee farm intact, Berkeley Cole and Finch Hatton riding up in a period safari car with Rigby 12 bore rifle, etc. and none of today's suffocating restrictions. Must have been quite an enchanting place then!

Redford used a Holland & Holland in 500/450...

It is in great shape.

I have handled that rifle many times. Including just a couple of months ago.

No, it's a problem.

I'm having some increased anxiety because my gun safe is nearly full. Does that mean I have to quit? What am I going to do when the next beauty comes along?

Wife says no more toy boxes in the house.

I hate having to contemplate a second divorce. . . . I sure do love her. Will be hard to say good-bye. I'm too addicted to quit.

What to do? See my point?

No, the happiness in the house is supposed to be the wife, when the gun rack is full or near full.

In the movie, they pointedly show a near full gun rack when Karen Blixen is happiest, and a near empty one when she is not.

You must watch the movie with your wife, and point this out to her, and the logic of it all.

Curl,

I have the solution. As you upgrade your stock as a premier double enthusiast and create a space dilema, I will humbly offer space in my safe for your overflow with of course 100% visitation priveldges to said rifles. You get to keep your doubles, continue aquiring and present the image of acquiescing to your wife's wishes. Everyone wins.....including me.......we can start with a couple of Henrys....and maybe the Woodward Automatic.

Bailey,

I'll think on that one. Not sure that would make me happy.

John,

Karen Blixen has the same emotions as I. If my gun rack is near empty I'm not happy at all.

Did Karen ever worry about what would happen if the gun rack filled to overflowing?

BTW, if Meryl Streep wants to visit my house and get all happy over an almost full gun safe, bring her on!

I had the solution many years ago come to me. You see women need to feel special, more special than your collectables. Doing some extras for her that level the playing field; nice dinners out, vacations, a new car once a year and lots of jewels.

Also, for the sake of sanity build a gunroom with a bank safe door, I have one in each of our homes, and NEVER let her in! I reckon that should solve your problem.

Well actually on second thought a divorce might be the answer!
