Loading for .240 flanged nitro
      #139901 - 02/08/09 04:10 AM

Gentlemen

I acquired a Holland .240 flanged nitro a few months back. It's time to get her in working order for the upcoming deer season. The gun was made in 1936 and proved for "cordite 31 1/2 100 max".

Does anyone out there know the stated velocity of the load of the day and the bullet shape. I know that the prior owner used 41 gr RL22 with 100 gr. Speer pointed at supposedly 2500 FPS. Don't know much more.

Any data would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.

Don

Holland's .240 Flanged used 38 grains nitrocellulose (not Cordite), and a 100 grain spire-point or semi-pointed bullet for 2775 fps in 28" barrels for 15 tons BaseCup, 46,400 PSI.

There are many British rifles marked as proved for Cordite that are chambered for cartridges that were never commercially loaded with Cordite. The .240 appears to be one of them.

I think I would carefully work up to standard velocity (as adjusted for barrel length) shooting over a chronograph with maybe IMR 4350 or IMR 4831, and standard primers. If the rifle has 26" barrels, I wouldn't exceed 2700 fps. Remember that by the time you've got conventional pressure signs, you're already in trouble.

This cartridge is available commercially from Kynoch. I'd probably check with them (David Little is the proprietor) about load data. I'd probably want to shoot some of their ammo over a chrono for a benchmark.

Dear Don,

shortly a couple of issues;

Firstly can not help on the loading data for your 240 Flanged, but what I've seen lately in the auctions in UK, there is plenty of old stock ammos for sale on that cal. If you interested, I can assist to get those for you from there.

The other note is just related to your used name on the forum; Sikahunter, which in finnish language would mean boarhunter. Thus as interest due to my roots will ask, is there any dependencies to Finland or just by accident having that?

Regards,
Tero

Thanks 400NitroExpress. Good info. Actually, I have an original 5 stick box of Kynoch ammo. Might be an excellent idea to put one through the chrono. I did not see the calibre listed on Kynoch,s website, but will e-mail David.

Tero, thanks much for you offer on the older ammo, but I think I'll try and work my own loads up with modern componants. Regarding the name Sikahunter, it has to do with one of my passions. That being hunting the free ranging sika deer which were released in 1916 on the marshy eastern shore of Maryland in Dorcester County. Quite fun to hunt these very tasty miniature elk, of course, only with a double rifle.

Perhaps I can get CptCurl to come up as my guest during the two week season. Yes Roscoe, thats an invitation. Double rifles only.

Regards

Don

Don:

You're right. I see now that it's marked "available as case only". Still, a contact with David would be a good idea. He's always been helpful for me.

A man after my own heart. Good luck Don.
