.577 2 2/4 " BPE update.
      #139634 - 27/07/09 01:34 PM

After a long wait until the 650 gr. Woodleigh BPE projectiles arrived from midway; I shot my .577 2.75" with them, bullets.

For those who don't know, this is a 1889(ish) rig with damascus tubes. Scary stuff indeed.

Using my superior powers of deduction, I mathematically concluded that 65gr of IMR 4198 would be a safe starting point. Naturally, I was correct.

It shot apart (7"), but held together.

I'll add one grain until it's 4" or so.

Remember - damascus. I'm not going to push this ole girl.

God bless the .577!

P.S. Recoil from this 8.5 pound rifle is... stout.

Nice to hear you blew the snot our of her bores!

That thing's stout and sound.
Why not try black powder?

I would love to give Black a go, but the modern thinking is, you're better off with a N.F.B to make it regulate, and no Black at my gunshops.

After devouring everything I can find regarding damascus bbl double rifles, including the collective wisdom of NE.com, I fell I'm proceeding as safely as possible - with one exception - I might have rung my chambers. There is a distinct ring at the end of the both chambers.

I'm going to go in a limb here and guess you're being paranoid, that you've been agonizing over this since you got the rifle, and that you haven't done a lick of harm to the .577

Unless you know for double damn sure that you screwed the pooch, put the rifle in the vault, have a warm glass of milk, and get some sleep.
Shoot it again tomorrow!

Did you cast the chambers before you shot it?
If so, do it again and compare the chamber castings.
How many rounds went through it?
Compare the first pair of cartridge brass with the last.

Once you confirm that you've done nothing to hurt your .577, look at Marrakai's and Curl's loads and compare them to what you've been shooting.
Might be another couple of recipes to try.

Cheers

Thanks Bonaz!

AS always valuable info is shared here.

I am thinking too of getting a .577BPE in either of the chamberlenghts. I can presume however that the 2 3/4" is easier to use smokeless in because it fills the case better rather than a 3 1/4".577cal?.
Was the 2 3/4" .577s not normally regulated with a 560 grain bullet?.
Get the Doublegun journal Spring 2002, Issue 1, page 127...there is a long artical about .577 Express by Ross Seyfried.

Hi Bonanza !

I have just been working up some loads for my T Bland 577BPE 2 3/4 ,hammered underlever as well !
steel barrels ,28in long , I was using AR 2208 (Varget) with Dacron filler , 650Gr Woodleigh BP Slugs & Jamieson cases ,shooting at 50yds , 80Grs shot 4.5in high & 5in apart ,left barrel 1461fps Right @ 1413fps - 85Grs 2.5 high , 4in apart left 1553fps Right 1498fps - 90Grs 3in apart 1.5 high
Left 1755fps Right 1685fps - thats only 1.5 from the centre of my target bull , recoil getting stiff , 95grs is next and should be centred , my left barrel looks like new & right barrel is near prefect too , maybe left barrel is tighter hence higher velocity ?

Hope this can be of some help ?

bonanza,

Congratulations! What great fun a .577 can be.

It sounds like your rifle might prefer the 560 grain bullets, as it is shooting apart with the 650.

What are you using for wadding?

Have you used a chronograph?

I have no experience with the 650 Woodleigh.

Keep up the good work.

Sarg,

I'm also trying Varget. 80gr did shoot about 7" apart. Will bump it up also.

Curl,

I have the 560 lead solids regulated with 68gr. of IMR4189. I'm using felt wads as you suggested.

Regarding the Woodleigh 650 softnose, I want it to shoot well enough to hit the kill zone with confidence thus providing me with the option of a premium bonded bullet.

I can send you 4 if you would like to try them. They are the correct thin jacket BPE projectiles.

Black powder isn't a gun store item anymore. But it's still very available. Several of the distributors are selling on line. They will also sell you as little as five pounds mix and match.

One such company in your area is Powder INC. http://www.powderinc.com/ Look very closely at Powder Inc's prices, they include shipping and hazmat fee in ther per pound price.

The is also a black powder distributor in Advance NC just north of you, go to http://www.goexpowder.com/distributors.html#nc for details.
