Don S just sent me pictures of his latest treasure - a Type B Mauser in 8x60 built in 1931. He should post more details. Please enjoy the pictures and Good Hunting!

Thank you very much for sharing pictures, Don and Congratulations again!

I like the style and the set up of the very substantial see-thru mounts for the scope.
Very classic.

Congratulations, Don. Again! That's a very clean rifle.

Could you please tell me the approximate distance between centre-line of bore and centre-line of scope. Also, do you need to crane your neck a lot to see through the scope?

Thanks.

Rustam

Don,
Another gorgeous one, which bore .318 or .323?

Rustam: centerline distance is 2" (5cm). No neck problems going from iron sights to scope.

4220: .318 bore. I'm a little surprised at this considering it was built in '31. It was not built for export and it's my understanding that German hunters favored the J bore over the S right up to the end of the war.

Nice. Can the magazine screws be timed?

A bit of sawdust under the bottom metal to compensate for wood shrinkage will correct the timing, but I did not get around to it before the photos.

Real german 8 mm rifles are .318".

German gunmakers used the tighter .318" bores to improve accuracy, but most military rifles had .323" with both versions of the bore. The army just widened the neck in the chamber 0,004" to take the slightly fatter S-bullet. The .323" S-bore and the S-versions of the 8 mm cartridges, however, became german standard in 1939.

The 8x60 is a fine cartridge - I have owned two rifles for it.

Beautiful rifle, indeed.

Fritz
