Building 500 NE on a Huglu 202B
      #138930 - 14/07/09 08:27 AM

I currently own a Huglu 202B 12 gauge and would like to convert it to a 500 NE 3". Now that Hornady is making brass and bullets this round is very affordable. I have read Ron Vella's take on the monoblock construction of the Hulgu/CZ SxS. Can a 500 NE be built on this gun and use the existing monoblock to construct the gun? Also, does anyone know someone that can do this work? Thanks!

Jeremy,

You could check with J White Gunsmithing. He is currently working on a 45-120 for me. I don't know if he'll make a 500 NE 3" on the 202B but the best way to find out is to drop him a line. Here's the link to his web page:

www.jwhitegunsmithing.com

His site and youtube have videos on one of his previous SxS conversions to 405 Winchester.

I forgot to mention that he released a new video a few months back clearing up some questions about shotgun to DR conversion.

Mauser416 do you know if your gun will have the machined monoblock that Jim uses or are you using the shotgun barels as the monoblock? Also, will your gun have the muzzle block that Jim uses (405 Winchester/Stoeger gun)? I ask because I emailed Jim awhile back and said I wasn't a fan of the big monoblock and muzzle block that he uses; not very clean looking. He said we was experimenting with a different muzzle block for regulating that wasn't so glaring.

Jeremy,

It should be a machined monoblock. We haven't finalized details yet as to the other matters. Once he work begins we'll review barrel length, contour, etc.

Jeremy,

What type of response did you get when you mentioned your dislike for the monoblock and muzzle block?

I'm having mine built on the CZ 12 ga. which is basically the same gun as your Huglu if I am correct. I am going with the 45-120 cartridge.

He stated that the monoblock was his preference because of the strength. I prefer the look of a clean monoblock by using the existing barrels (my preference). As far as the muzzle block Jim said that he is refining that. The Stoeger 405 Winchester that Jim built was for sale on Auction Arms a few months back and the muzzle block was huge thing. I have seen Ron Vella's doubles on the forums and he uses the existing barrels as the monoblock and it is clean.

Jeremy,

Have you made any more progress?

The 202B are very strong, I've built a number of DR on them. A thing to remember about all shotgun conversions is that the mono-blocks are profiled for the slim breeches. If you re-use them the barrel profiles will pretty much follow that of the original barrels. Personally it doesn't bother me, but some purest will argue against it. Actually I have found that if you make a new mono-block trying to follow the frame without proper taper, it comes out looking like a beer can with tubes stuck on it. JMHO.
