I hope your secret hiding place wasn't "where the sun doesn't shine!". Although I suppose that could work for some.

Thank you guys some very funny replys there .
I was reading in the last couple of weeks in DRC there has been a increase in PENIS thefts not be cutting off but by Witch Craft ? ? and they are burning & hanging the culprits ? ?
It is (Brazzaville) Congo , CFA is official currency , but I'm hearing US funds mentioned a bit , Travellers cheques will not work im told .
1. West African witchcraft and penis thefts go hand in hand. From an April 2008 article -
Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men’s penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.
Reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur.
Rumours of penis theft began circulating last week in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo’s sprawling capital of some 8 million inhabitants. They quickly dominated radio call-in shows, with listeners advised to beware of fellow passengers in communal taxis wearing gold rings.
Purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.
Of course, the penises have not really disappeared.
“But when you try to tell the victims that their penises are still there, they tell you that it’s become tiny or that they’ve become impotent. To that I tell them, ‘How do you know if you haven’t gone home and tried it’,” he said.
2. One source for local news - it was alot more active back during the Civil War. http://allafrica.com/congo_brazzaville/

3. Ziplock baggies, good for hiding stuff where the sun never shines.

All of the above has worked for me in various circumstances throughout Africa.
In addition, I would add that it is important to not let it show that you are scared or intimidated. Showing this will add fuel to their fire and assure them that you are an easy target that will give in shortly. Behave in a neutral, polite way, with a smile (but not a shit eating grin!). Do not show impatience or that you are in a hurry. Unless you want to fork over money for nothing.
All of the above has helped me thru over 20 African countries without giving into bribes/baksheesh/cadeau, even with guns being waved and pointed.
As for hiding money, as John has mentioned there are lots of places if one uses ones imagination.
Erik and I once also discussed the usefulness of appearing stupid and not understanding what they wanted ie a bribe or whatever. Does work too.

No the sun didn't shine there, but not in "that place".

Forgot to mention that. But yes, acting stupid really does help sometimes. I've gotten out of lots of bribe situations in French and Arabic speaking African countries by pretending not to understand what they wanted. They all eventually got bored trying to explain to the dull witted Norwegian what cadeau or baksheesh meant, and sent us on our way.
I've tried the same procedure with my wife when she's occasionally asked me to vacuum the house or do the dishes, but for some reason she hasn't been as easily fooled by my stupid act as the "officials" I've dealt with in Africa.
