Thanks very much.

Lots of support so far here. Inside the Game Department the only objection was to free running dogs. No one can let dogs run free here for fear of wolves anyway, but the leash requirement put an end to those objections, so it appears with public encouragement this proposal will succeed. We need every help available to improve recovery rates. Increasingly, reports are coming in that game lost and found a day later are obliterated by wolves.

" No one can let dogs run free here for fear of wolves anyway,"

So dogs can't be let off a leash in any areas ?

Is that because they are worried the dogs
will get killed by Wolves ?

Dogs are like hamburgers for wolfes, they take as many they can get hold of.

500:

All dogs, particularly those that make noise, are wolf magnets. Wolves hear their baying, are attracted, find them and kill them. Hound hunting is effectively a thing of the past. It is a heritage of generations destroyed by unmanaged wolves. Yesterday yet another fellow told me of his three bear hounds all killed by wolves, the two females with one or two bites to the chest {the dogs probably lying down in submission}, the male torn to pieces.

Quiet dogs are also at risk as would be any dog not restrained by a leash, that is, not close to a person.

The leash takes care of the objection that dogs might be used to run elk and deer and also is what any tracker would want to do anyway, as a dog let loose in the forest is a dead dog.

So wolves continue to devastate our deer, elk and moose populations, with total devastation the result in the Lolo and now our area hit very hard. And they are a continuous threat to dogs and livestock. If you hear bitterness in my attitude toward so-called environmentalists and their Federal stooges that foisted the wretched Endangered Species Act on us, you hear right.

The wolf is a disease organism that should be wiped out.

Thanks.

I knew wolves didn't like and killed dogs, but you put it right in perspective which is what I wanted in terms of hunting.

9.3,

Are wolves also a concern for bird dogs in Idaho?

I have not heard of problems arising with bird dogs yet. I suspect the proximity of the hunters makes this less likely.

Voted for it, hope it helps. I think it's a good idea and being that the dog is leashed, don't see how there could be any objection.

Thanks for the support fellows.

Spent the day on the 4wheeler spraying weeds and mowing trails, and then took a ride to check out the game situation. Saw a whopping two deer over the whole 30 miles.

But I did get a picture of wolf track for 500.

Guys, it is so different here from what it was 5 years ago. Like night and day.

Anyway, here ya' go. These are big, killing machines.

I admit it. I hate them.

They are.

I wish I could say that this picture was in my "archives", but it wasn't. I took it today. Getting a pic of wolf track isn't a special deal. They are pretty much everywhere.

Thanks.

For those not familiar with the proposal, it is:

Allow the use of one blood-trailing dog controlled by leash during lawful hunting hours and within 72 hours of hitting a big game animal to track wounded animals and aid in recovery.

I am told that most within Fish & Game Dept support the proposal. Right now the rules are somewhat vague and very likely there are those who already use a dog for recovery of wounded game but a person could theoretically be charged for doing so. This rule change would clarify the rules and make known what is legal and what is not.

* One Dog
* Leashed
* Used during lawful hunting our
* Used w/in 72 hours of the wounding shot
* Dog used to recover, not hunt big game

All rule changes are somewhat difficult to change, and the process for this one has been long in coming, but so far so good!

We truly believe this change will very positively impact recovery rates of big game as people become familiar with blood tracking dogs and how successful they are in recovering animals that cannot be found by individuals. Also, the guiding outfitters would have the benefit of keeping a blood tracking dog in camp which would greatly simplify their recovery.

Thanks for your help!

Rod

I voted... Pity they had to stick that bit about hunting hours, but perhaps wise if there are wolves and bears around.

That is a bit of a downer, but their "fear" of "jacklighting" overcame them.

It WILL cause a certain amount of trouble for critters lost at dusk in bad weather, but that is the cost, I guess.
