The Woodward is Back!
      #137787 - 23/06/09 12:07 AM

It is resurrected!
http://www.gunsinternational.com/James-Woodward-303-cal-Double-Rifle.cfm?gun_id=100088767

It now has an original case somehow, and the bores "remain in excellent condidtion"

It was discussed in great detail here:

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=133419&an=0&page=1#Post133419

I figured if it was all spruced up, it might be a $20K gun, but $35K!!

I just noticed, the rear scope base is now absent!

That was a quick makeover for sure.

Are we sure this is the same rifle? The Cabelas photos showed very little case color. But, the case label is torn in exactly the same place, making me think it is the same.

Still, you fall in love with the Woodward snap action Automatic when you get one in your hands. I have thoroughly enjoyed mine.

Curl

P.S. I really don't think the case is original to the rifle.

Same case for sure. You can enlarge generalwar's picture and it is clearly the same case.

I didn't crib any pictures from when it was sold before and the case didn't have a charge card in it numbered to the gun. So, either this is a different rifle in the same case, or the same rifle restored in the same case. Either way, non original case to the gun.

I agree - a fast turn around, especially when it is being put back on the website it sold from in the first place.
Maybe they expect us all to have as bad a memory as 500nitro

There's a funny story behind this, and yes this is the same Woodward Cabela's had out..

I was the second person to call on this gun whilst Cabela's had it, first dude ditched it, so I had my chance with it..

I had it sent to my smith for a quick looking over, he was not impressed, as the gun had several major problems. First being the cracked stock, the stock had also been cut and poorly pieced together with a horn plate. Next was the barrels, someone had drilled in to the rib and affixed a modern single scope mount for a german style receptacle scope. The bores were good but not great, as there was some pitting and frosting through the chamber, and in to the lands about 3-4" at the breech end.

With that said I could have bought it for $14,000.00 USD, but I passed on it and it sold for $14,500.00 about a week later.

Well, about 4 days ago I got a call explaining they had this wonderful little 303 Woodward in mint condition, and further explaining the gun is totally original. I asked for pictures and when they arrived I knew it was the same gun just weeks before I had passed on for $14k. So I called back and asked the history of the gun just to see what they would say. I got the "oh its been sitting in a widows closet for 30 years, its near perfect!"

I guess they just assume none of use are in the loop.

This one will be around for a long time now at $35k.

Another lesson learned, and the moral of the story: Buyer Beware

I don't have a problem with frosting in the first 3 - 4 inches of a barrel, ESPECIALLY on a 303, however the frosting in the chamber is a worry.

as to the second part of the story, well, what can you say !!!

I imagine they just had it honed out a bit with the other cleanup, but it still will have visible remains I bet, and feel a little loose with the brass in. The stock had been cracked in two spots and a piece that fell out glued back in at the rear just beneath the cheekpiece as well.

Wow, thats very interesting generalwar. Bayere Beware for sure.

But that is a wonderfull gun, I love mine to bits, and it behaves very noghty when I take mine out shooting. The lines nd shapes of this strange topstrap makes it actually very beautifull, at least in my eyes.

Its a nice little addon to the collection.

What is(are) the cause(s) of chamber versus barrel frosting? Why does one case present a concern and not the other?

Barrel frosting is caused by powder burn. I don't have a problem with barrel frosting if it is even and no major pits in it.

Chambers on the other hand - a big no no IMHO, I would be unlikely to buy a gun with chamber marks in it as if you polish them out they are then out of spec and that can cause other problems.

As to what causes them (chamber marks), case separations, bad cleaning, powder blow back, a number of things.

That's my HO.

Small world guys.

I called Justin at Cabela's. He stated that he had no less than 30 inquiries on the gun. He further stated that he was accepting offers on the gun but would accept the first full price offer. I told him to hold the gun, consider it sold at full price. I asked, but how much would they allow in trade for my Merkel. He checked with Andy and Tom and came back with a lower allowance than I desired. During the same phone conversation, I told Justin forget the trade, I will just take the gun outright. Again, during the same conversation, when the deal is done, he tells me he is holding the gun for some guy in New York who will let him know by the end of the day.

Well, bottom line is Osprey ended up with the gun. In my opinion, the whole deal with Justin stunk on ice.
