975NE?
      #13745 - 20/04/04 10:42 PM

A mate of mine recently told me that he had heard of a 975 NE or similar. Was someone leading him on or is there actually something bigger than the .700NE... If this is the case I would really like to see the specs on this, cannon, as it sounds just a little too big to be practicle, but still fun.

You could stuff an 8 Bore with smokeless powder and it would be a .975 NE.

That is a brass case, 4 bore size. Ross' Evans 4 bore double is .975, but it is only called a 4 bore.Similiar to your Imperial 4 bore case.I built a 1000HE
belted version of a 4 bore.Ed.

Gregg Reed and I have been trying. No luck yet.We have found a place (Krieger), to get barrels made to the bore
size that will work best with our brass cases.Between
.980 and 1.00 inches. We will have to get tooling set up with them.I have a heavy barrel on hand to get reamed out and rifled for 4 bore.Gregg's buddy is working on his barrel machine also. Are there anymore of those 4 bore
Imperial cases around?? I like to get one to measure and
compare to ours.ED.

Woah I didn't even know there was such thing as a 4 bore. In Australia anything bigger than .77 cal requires a cannon licence. From what I gather this is a custom cartridge only and you can't actually buy it? Has anyone seen any recoil/muzzle energy figures for anything around this size?

London guns there built some. Mickey has a case made by Imperial.Ross hunted there with his 4 bore Evans. Being
in USA, don't know about cannon licences that you mention.
Usually they are loaded to black powder performance levels,
like an 1800 gr bullet at about 12-1400 fps.Ed.

The cannon licence is just another one of australia's stupidly over-protective gun laws.

82A1, your handle is waaaay toooooo loooong. Go to African Hunter and check out the article on the 4- Bore DB that a Canuck built and brought it to Africa. Go to the Safari Archives, then click the firearms file archives.

J.D. Jones built a rifle for his .950 JDJ. The gun weighed 100lbs, and the muzzle brake, 18 pounds alone. It was made off of a 20mm case, and is no longer in production.

thanks for the info 475guy, I checked the site and I am reading the story on the 4 bore as I type. I also just found something about a steyr 15.2mm cartridge. Does anyone know what 15.2mm is in inches?

Well I finally finished the article on the 4 bore and I must say I am impressed. Not only did a guy spend 10 years building one of the biggest and hardest hitting rifles in the world. But he also had the guts to fire it knowing that he would be hit with a few hundred foot pounds of recoil!!! Does anyone know if that rifle ever goes on display? It sounds like one hell of a gun...

I think that it was mentioned elsewhere that the guy can't be located for information and just to see the DB. Maybe the Socialists made him destroy it.

I would have let him hide it at my house.

Oh, would you? You're just so kind. How many rounds of ammo did you want with that, Sir?
