Montana Professional Hunter Action
      #137071 - 10/06/09 11:20 AM

I was looking at the website and noticed that a series of photos have been posted of PH actions being completed. I am looking to start a 505 Gibbs project and these look interesting at about $1K. I would look to add an Oberdorf style drop box (Blackburn) but there are no specs on the action screw widths posted. Any thoughts?

I believe the Montana actions are based on winchester model 70's more or less and I believe that the PH action screw hole spacing is unique to that action. But I don't know this for sure. I believe the bottom metal was outsourced for this action but I don't know by whom. Why not drop Maggie a line at CNC Specialties (Blackburn) she may Know.

Yes, why not pick up the phone and call Montana ?

Seriously, why not go straight to the source, tell
them what you are planning and they probably know
what fits and what doesn't and can give you all the correct answers first up.

Montana actions are made around the Win Mod 70.

I have had two on order for over two years now with no end in sight for a delivery date. Every time they provide one, they later have to abandon it, with the excuse that the parts they have subcontracted are not up to their exacting standards. I plan on having them shipped to a respected gunsmith for a careful examination before deciding whether to accept them. Incidentally, I paid for them in full over a year ago, on the representation that delivery was imminant.

I will be glad to offer a critique, if, and when, I finally take delivery.

I received a letter a couple of months ago stating Montana had been purchased by a gent in the Hawaiian Isles. Stated they were working on getting production back up.

I ordered two of the PH actions way back when they were first announced, have not heard a peep from Montana over the years and have given up.

So who knows what is going on.

I have 4 of the standard magnum Montana actions, have not used them yet, but should be building a 458 Lott on one soon. Also have the stock blank, reamer and barrel and sights, just waiting for time for a winter project.

Read page 13-14 of the 12GA FH thread for pictures.
The last parts the company needed was firing pins for the PHs.Everything else done.
They got few samples to try last summer and tested them and blue pill high pressure
tested first action with dinky gibbs or some such case, that they then
sent me that first one, as I had barrel, stock ,everything ready, to test with
my 700HE 3.25" case. I tested it to 65k psi in that big case.
Couple days after they sent mine, they called to get rest
of the firing pins and found out the company filed bankruptcy. And
the powers to be couldn't find the pins or the tools Montana paid for.
So they are in court for money or the tools and pins. In meantime they've
found other places to make them and wuil have some soon..
Jeff the owner posts on Accuratereloading Forums in
the Big bore section and you can get more info there.Ed
