Spare ammo holders?
      #136668 - 04/06/09 05:10 AM

For those that have been hunting with a DR for some time...what do you find is the best way to carry extra ammo? I hunt where it is cold so a leather slide on my belt would be under my hunting jacket and too slow. What else is out there that will keep a few round handy & quiet? Last fall I fumbled with a reload on a running buck. I did get the buck but was very glad it was not a large bear. You Gents that hunt dangerous game with your DRs what works for you?

Ammo holder on belt, RHS.

But where I hunt I'm not wearing a coat like you.

It's a hard one, Maybe you could have an ammo holder
in your pocket where it is kept dry ?

Or wear a belt OVER your jacket with the ammo holder on it
so you still have quick access to the ammo ?

Or sew a couple (2 - 4) of ammo loops into the outside of the jacket where you can get at them easily ?

A great idea.

I don't own a double and my magazine rifles have sufficient for my needs, but this is a great idea. I wear a Filson Double Mackinaw in cold weather here and just might do this, as I have some old green wool material from an ancient Greek army greatcoat that would work OK.

M141-

I tend to keep my clothing light and tight, ammunition on the belt - even where it's cold but I don't hunt from a blind or a stand and am constantly on the move when in the hunt.
I have a couple of Filson wool coats that feature tubular pockets, covered by the pocket flaps on the chest.
I've seen guys use that kind of arrangement for spare cartridges at-the-ready.
Big pockets and pocket flaps on the upper chest of a coat or shirt can catch the butt of the rifle on it's way to your shoulder, cartridges there could make that worse if it affected you.
I've heard of guys taking small 2-cartridge belt ammo carriers and lashing them to their wrist with a velcro (or similar) watch band.
I've also seen some very slick and quick reloads from sling-mounted cartridge loops, the face of a cobra style sling can take two loops with room to spare (the sling for my .458 has a pouch that carries four)

Test-drive any setup you have time and time again every time you're at the range or in the field.
Do all your loading from the 'spare ammo' carrier when you're doing your target shooting or dry firing practice and get it down to second nature.

I've ditched a few shirts and light jackets that didn't end up working out for me due to issues with presenting the rifle or shotgun (pocket or flap catching on the buttplate or pad etc), done the same with ammo carriers and holsters that got in the way of getting the gun or ammo into action.

Cheers

Tinker

It's only the RHS of a coat that needs to be free from pockets, flaps etc. like you, I've ditched a few pieces of clothing or Sewn up the one that was catching.

Plenty of room on a coat to sew a couple of loops on.

the suggestion of a couple of elastic loops on the wrist is a good one. You can actually buy these off the shelf.

Cold ? Where he lives, Halifax NS Canada I gather is bloody freezing !!!

All part of making sure you have your XXXX squared away before a hunt.

I have these really cool cartridege holders that slide right over the butt of my rifles. They hold about six rounds nicely and the ammo is readily available and right under my cheek. I have one that is open and another that has a flap that clicks over the ammo. It looks like both types are readily available on ebay too. Here are the links:

Good luck,

I do not like the ones that go on the rifle's butt. I've had ammo fall out when on a stalk.

Ammo holder on belt, LHS (lefty). I never wear the belt over my winter jackets – if there is an action to be expected I just pull 2 rounds out of the holder and put them in the pocket of the jacket where I usually keep my bare left (trigger) hand from cold - I try to keep out without glove on that hand as long as possible while my right gloved hand holds the rifle. 2 cartidges are ok, 3 is a crowd. I have tried those sling-mounted cartridge loops but gave up on them after I have lost a couple cartridges in a thick stuff.

If you cast a glance at the pictures on http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....true#Post127140, in the pictures showing me with a leopard, kudu and Peters' gazelle, you will see what appears to be a flapped pocket on the right side of the shirt. The pocket is actually open at the top, and inside of it are five elasticized loops large enough to accomodate five rounds of .505 ammunition or anything smaller, such as the .375 H&H I used on the leopard and the kudu. The cartridges are protected from trash or dust but at the same time are easy to get to and never presented me with a problem when rapidly reloading.

Just don't carry two rounds in the fingers of your shooting hand, as Robert Redford did in "Out of Africa". Evidently he read somewhere that Dennis Finch-Hatton always carried two spare cartridges in the fingers of his right hand when shooting dangerous game, without learning that D F-H was left-handed. Could be a problem.

I have a DVD box set of Peter Hathaway Capstick on his last series of safaris just prior to his death. I noticed that he also carried two spare cartridges in his fingers while hunting DG with a double. Maybe that works for some folks - I've tried it and it feels a bit awkward for me. For me: the double gun for fun, when my life's in question - bolt action all the way!

Ditto on the style points there!

Back to the comment on sling mounted spares, the sling on my .458 has a snap-closure pouch, not a pair of loops, holds four cartridges.

I practice shooting my SxS rifles with a pair of cartridges in my support hand, quickly reloading and shooting a second pair. Something I'd learned years ago while training with martial arms -- you'll do what you've been trained to do.
It's good to have a foundation of protocol to stand on when in stressful situations.

I'll remember to ask your PH to etch that on your grave stones.

When Capstick was hunting a lion with his guide & firend (I don't recall his name at the moment - Dennis somebody). His friend's DR had two hang-fires in a row! And if it haden't been for Capstick's trusty 375 H&H bolt action, they would have both been kitty dinner for sure. Don't get me wrong, I love both my doubles, but I'm not that comfortable with them...

Hang fires?

Quote:

Sounds like an ammunition problem to me.

Pop a squib into the throat of your bolt rifle and your're screwed.
At least with a double rifle you have a chance with a second rifle, one that's already in your hands!

Nice that someone was there to save the guy, but if those were hang-fires, chances are they'd perform the same in a bolt rifle just the same.

I had that happen last season , when my hunter put his rifle down(375H&H)after shooting a Buffalo 4 times and would not shoot any more , I used his 375 to finish the Bull who was heading for croc infested swamp , but was not a nice feeling hearing a pop instead of nice roar & have the slug stuck in the bore , made me think more on the double issue !

Sarg -- graphic picture of a great point!

Sounds like (possible) crimp failure on the last round.

One of the things to push into one's training is to load from the ready supply *and* to rotate the ammunition.

I've seen discussions in a few 19th century texts the issue of pulling bullets (in the magazine or the second/other barrel) by way of recoil -- and the reminder to (when the first shot was enough) get that round into the 'first position' so that it's not repeatedly subjected to the bullet-pulling action of recoil.

Training, training, training...

I find I have to pull the rounds out of the mag and re do them so bottom is now top and any that are a bit iffy get hand fed into the chamber as the first round.

i would do the same with doubles except I tend not to fire only one shot as I always put in an insurance shot.

Damage to rounds in magazine rifles is a problem.

Quite true & one of the 101 things I would try to do in my working day when time is short & I have hunters their wives, game, vehicles, toilets, showers & such to fix !

But , it is a little worse here , it was MY work rifle (458) that went pop on the FRIST shot !
A dud round I think ? I never had time to check it out , a lot was happening at the time ,it was very hard to knock the bullet back out later at camp !

We don,t shoot a lot , but when we do it is normally important .

Sarg-

Funny -- the *only* squib round I've ever popped was *the first round* through my Whitworth .458

My mate at the ranch had a container of loaded ammunition he wanted to give me (350gr, evidently medium loads) and I know him to be an ultra skilled handloader.
Turns out (via the little card at the bottom of the case) his nephew loaded the ammo and didn't neck-size the brass properly.
We immediately pulled all the bullets and dumped the powder.
I then detailed all the brass and loaded it back properly.

Gotta say, at the bench the sound of a hiss-pop definitely pinched my heartbeat for a moment. Secondary ignition would/could have been quite a bitch with a plugged bore!

A bolt gun action full of powder is no quick self-cleaning proposition either!
