Purdey Oak & Leather case
      #136531 - 02/06/09 03:58 AM

I just picked up an oak and leather James Purdey case for .577 double rifle #12345 (maybe 12343 - label is a little smudged there)

Anybody here have the gun?

Although that's not the SN of my rifle, I'd be interested to hear what the configuration of the case is and/or see a photo.

I've been looking for a case for my 20bore rifle - and if this one would work I'd like to get in line for a possible purchase some time in the future.

Cheers

Tinker,
Not sure if I want to sell it just yet but if so, you will be first in line.
It is sized for 28" barrels - 2 1/4" wide at breech, 1 3/4" wide at muzzle.
It has little wood trimmed recesses for the front and rear sights. Unfortunately, they are a little narfed up from somebody closing the lid on some other barrels which didn't line up.
The exterior is really worn, cracked, scuffed etc. Pics below.

Quite a number: 1-2-3-4-5

Nice case for sure!

It's fairly similar to the case with my Purdey .500, SN 14967.

Tinker, I hate to say it, but it's not the right case for you. Your rifle should be in one of the all-wood cases with the little hinged handle on top. This case is much too late for your rifle.

Huvius-

Thanks for the note and the photo.

Curl-

I have to agree, later case from a later time and address.
Wouldn't be a bad place for the rifle 'til I found the right one though!

Cheers

Huvius,

I have a Watson Brothers 577 black powder express double rifle that's in need of a good oak and leather case. If you decide to sell your case and Tinker doesn't need it, let me know since I might still be looking for one.

Thanks,

Jim

I'm surprised all you guys are looking for cases.

Plenty of cases come up for Auction every year in the UK
and I see cases for sale in the US on web sites (or have in the past).

I think I have something like 15 - 20 empty cases here
I have bought over the last 5 - 10 years specifically to
reline for double Rifles.

I think maybe you guys should look around a bit more
and you'll find empty cases for sale / auction.

I hear that. I must have a dozen or more nice Oak and leather case I have picked up with the intention of relining and refitting them for a rifle or shotgun someday. I never seem to get around to it though.

In London last year I was in an Antique store and they had 4 very nice Purdey and Holland cases that had been turned into end tables, complete with legs and all. They made pretty neat tables and you could move the lamps and open the lid for storage of odds and ends but what a waste of a nice case. The price was pretty high though so maybe what the Green movement and recycling is coming to.

500Nitro,

I have seen plenty of leather cases with and without brass corners but very few oak and leather cases. I actually bought one for the rifle in question but I have decided not to use it since it will be a very tight fit and won't allow any room for accessories. I don't think that I could even get a cleaning rod in under the barrels. That case is nice but it was made for a hammerless 16-bore with 26in barrels so it is rather small. I'm not in a big hurry for a case so I'll just keep looking.

Regards,

Jim
