Heading back to Africa starting tomorrow for my second safari and 5th visit. Back to hunt with Andrew McLaren safaris for free range Springbok and then off to Chris Troskie for a few cull animals plus Impala, Kudu and Eland.

Looking forward to testing my 9.3x62 on African Plains Game.

Full report on my return.

topet1, I'm going to want a play-by-play complete with pics (I'm sure I speak for the rest of the group). Aim straight and drop them all with the first shot.

I might use this post as a travel blog. Pictures will follow after I get home.

Had a 12 hour flight landed in Jo'Burg last night. Didn't use a meet and greet service but the Afton House pick up service did the same thing and it only cost me tips.

No problems with my rifle. I did have to help the QANTAS check-in-staff in Sydney with how to process my rifle as they don't do too many. No one has checked my ammo this time, unlike last time.

A Braii and into bed. 6.5 hours sleep, up at 04:11 local time, A fantastic breakfast and lift out to O.T.. Curently waiting for my domestic connection to Bloomfontein (where I pick up a hire car for 5 days) and then drive out to Andrew McLarens. I should be hunting within 24 hours of landing in RSA.

I bought 1 litre of Mount Gay Rum at Sydney duty free for A$27. Bargain. Also got a better exchange rate for the Aussie dollar at OT than possible at Sydney airport. Most transaction will be by Credit card and the Aussie dollars value is riseing.

All good so far and not too tired.

Hey John..

Nice to hear you are you are back..

Say hallo to Andrew & Cellia...

I hope you get that springbok of yours, but with a 9.3 mauser, you better get have 101% control of the bulletdrop, because they are a loooong way out..+300meters.
My 270wea was about the ideal calber around Andrews place.
Please use this thread here as a blog...

I did send you my hunting report two weeks ago, but I have now experienced PM`s doesn`t work. ( have send pm to others with no response)

Sounds like a drink one would not want to order in a rough pub if talking too quickly and drunk.

Well I still have 500mls of Mount Gay Rum left .....Too tired to drink from walking ....

I managed to get a nice 13.5" 6 yo Springbok Ram and a Female herd management Black Wildebeast which we almost lost.

Full report in a week or two. Off after Eland, Kudu, Impala and more Herd Management animals next.

Cheers.

Hello again,

Well after hunting with Andrew McLaren I am now in Ellisras hunting with Chris Troskie. I have taken a nice heavy, older Kudu bull with a single 237 yard shot from my 9.3x62 (So much for Bushveldt shooting distances). I have also taken a lovely 750-800 kg Eland with a single 40 metre running neck shot after much drama which I will include in a full report. A mature Male Warthog shot at 50 metres through both lungs and DRT, has also gone to a better place.

One thing that is happening is that the Woodleigh 286 PPSN projectiles are not expanding at all. I have killed my animals so they have not failed but the five rounds I have fired at ranges of 1x point blank, 2x 40 metres, 1x 50 metres and 1x 237 yards (which I did not expect to expand), have not opened. Muzzle velocity is approx 2,930 fps.

I bought some locally made PMP ProAmm 286 RNSP's but they have not grouped well in my rifle. I will press on with the Woodleighs as I only have herd management/meat animals to shoot from now on and will try for head shots .

I will be contacting Woodleigh's upon my return and sending back the remaining projectiles from that Lot Number for investigation. I have only hit ribs with them but I expected them to expand in the Eland. Both the skinner and Chris Troskie agree they are not expanding. I have great faith in Woodleigh Projectiles and seem to have hit an anomally.

From now on I will use the RNSP Woodleighs in the 9.3x62 if/when I return to Africa.

Isn't that a hell of a speed for 286gr slugs in the 9.3x62? I'd have thought that would flatten FMJs (ha ha).

Good to hear from you again!

My godness...2930Ft/sec with a 286grain bullet from a 9.3 mauser....close to 378 Wea Mag ballistics

Glad you are having a good time. 237 yards on Kudu is very well done....but ofcouse, your 9.3 is more flatshooting than my .270wea....hahaha.
Woodleighs RNSP will expand for sure...even at lower velocities like from a .333 jeffery

Typo 2,390fps. Sorry for that.

The Kudu was 6-8 yo and went 50" green and about 180kg dressed.

The Eland went 33.5" green and 750-800kg live weight. 7-8 yo.

GTG more hunting to do.....

Tophet

Sounds like a great trip!
Hope it continues to be successful...

That Woodleigh story is a worry... that's the second major performance inconsistency I've heard recently. I'd have expected a 9.3mm 286gr PP to open up properly on a Kudu

A bit OT but...
I was at the Melbourne Shot Show recently and got a few samples of Woodleigh's new 180gr .270 bullet... also a PP design, and by the part still visible at the tip they look like a VERY thick jacketed bullet.

There was some uncertainty by the guy at the Woodleigh stand as to whether they would stabilise in a 1:10" twist, but a mate who got some at the same time reports they stabilise fine and print a little bit lower but along the same vertical plane as his 150gr load.
He was keen to use them on Sambar

I will section one soon and post back here with a photo... but I would say with a length of 35.1mm (SD of .334 and BC of .513) they too would zip end-to-end through a Cape Buffalo
