9.3X62 CZ 550 Full stock
      #13591 - 16/04/04 04:43 PM

I've commited myself to buying my buddy's CZ550 full stock 9.3X62 .. I love full stocked carbines, but I can't stand that hump backed buttstock. Does anybody have a source for a classic style full stock that won't break the bank? Otherwise I plan on purchasing direct from CZUSA, a American classic style rifle stock which should give me a pretty handy lil 20" carbine..
BTW... List your favorite loading data, I have found Varget works fantastic in my .375H&H Does anyone have a Varget load for the 9.3?

Thanks

Good choice!

I've found that Varget is the Unique of rifle powders and I'm using if for everything from .223 to .405.

Hodgdon's website has load data for Varget in the 9,3X62. I'm using a grain and a half less than their Max load with the 286gr Nosler and getting right at 2,400fps using Lapua brass and CCI primers from my 24" Douglas bbl.

A no. 53 cabinet makers rasp will do wonders for that stock, they certainly leave enough wood on them...I have done a couple of those for friends and they sure liked them..It lowers the comb just a tad but thats no biggie in my book, in fact all my guns are set up for irons and then I shoot a scope with them also...never has bothered me.

My 9.3x62 loads are with RL-15 and H414..

I get 2520 FPS with 59 grs. of RL-15 and a 286 gr. Nolser in my 26" barrel...58 gives me 2450 with a 300 gr. Swift and just a tad less with a 320 gr. Woodleigh..I really like the 230 gr. GS HV at 2670 FPS for mule deer and even elk...

Thanks Guy's

Now as soon as that tax refund gets here, that project is mine!

Ray, I thought about that. But If "I" did it, it would look like an amateur hosed up a perfectly good stock..

You can get a spiffy stock from the Great American Gunstock company. I do believe they make one for the 550 and you can get it in several grades of wood, too. I am thinking about getting a new stock for my 550.

Has anyone noticed that the 9.3x62 seems to average about 50 fps per inch of barrel between 20 and 26 inches? That is, it seems that increasing barrel size from 24 to 26 results in ~ 100 fps. Going from 20 to 24 inches results in ~200 fps. I have never noticed this before with any other caliber.

Maybe that's the reason Ray always touts his 9.3 with 26" barrels. Evidently, 26" barrels were very common back in the old days. Only today do you seem to see the shorter barrels to 23" or so.

Robert

How do you know this? Have you been checking velocities posted? I was thinking of one with a 22" barrel but do not want to give up the 100-150fps.

In my experiance the bigger the bore the less velocity lost by shrotening the barrel.

Mickey,

I have been reading a lot lately about the 9.3 bore and paying attention to the velocities posted by folks for either the 250 or the 286 grain. It seems pretty consistent that folks who chrono their loads average about 50 fps per inch of barrel from 22 inches to 26 inches. One poster actually stated that the 9.3x62 cartridge really liked long barrels.

Now, this is not a scientific study. You could get the same velocity in your 22 incher that others get in their 26 inchers. Who knows what the leade is like in these guns? No one commented about that nor did any of them say they had custom throats on their rifles. If you have one made, I would definitely look into typical leades and throats.

I just happen to notice that over quite a few postings, folks who shoot 9.3x62's seem to average 50 fps per inch of barrel from 22 inches to 26 inches and it seems to be very consistent. And, that is something I find very interesting.

In general, you are right, big bores have large expansion ratios which require medium speed powders, so they tend to work well with shorter barrels without the loss a 7mm STW would have in a 22 inch barrel. I had a 22 inch barrel put on my 458 Win Mag just for that very reason.

Robert,
That has been my experience with most of the 9.3x62 I have built and I have a chronograph and my findings have been right there with all but a couple of rifles...

I know the 9.3x62 cooks with more barrel, at least with H414 and RL-15...I can give my 26" barrel 375 H&H a run for its money with my 26" barrel 9.3x62...I get about a 100 FPS less velocity but with 20 grs. more bullet in my 9.3x62 and that 320 gr. Woodleigh about equals my 300 gr. 375 H&H load for all practical purposes, and I have one or two more rounds down in the magazine. Pretty impressive stuff IMO....

Cut that gun off at 20 inches and its a 35 Whelen, but thats OK too....

I'll post velocity and loading data in this lil shorty. I also have a few Norma factory rounds 286gr Plastic point, I will also post the data on that.

I was pleasantly surprised by the recoil, or the lack of recoil would be a better way to put it. Feels more like a 30-06. Rifle not as accurate as hoped for, but has potential. I will be doing a glass bedding job on this baby asap. This trigger system also sucks. I will be on the search for a standard adjustable, so if you know who makes one, please let me know.. I purchased this rifle as sort of an experiment. I have yet to have any experiance with this caliber untill now. So now I'm in search mode for an original Mauser Model A/B or Mannlicher Schoenauer or one of the old world original classic makers in this caliber. My thanks to those on this thread who offered their experiances and information.. Let me know what you think, and if this information changed or strengthened your views... BTW I'm certain I could bump the velocity up by another 100fps.... But why?...450

I can not image changing the “Bavarian” stock on the 550 FS. The one I shout fits like a glove.

Let me know what you do with the old stock when you change it.

Hauptjager.. All is a matter of different taste, being VERY American, "I" personely prefer more classic style stocks verses the Bavarian style. If you read my report about my first time out with this rifle, you will notice that this stock style did earn some respect from me on how well it worked and felt. But I still can't stand looking at it.. But then again that is just "my" opinion and maybe not others. It all makes good campfire with sundowners debate, who's right? who's wrong?..nobody.. Much in the sense that Ray Atkins suggest's that a 20" barrel is nothing more than a .35 Whelen.. I might have agreed to a certain point, untill my velocity results convinced me different. I got 2385fps with a 285gr Woodleigh.. Now between velocity, bullet weight, sectional density, ect.ect. I would argue that this 20" 9.3 is something more than a .35 Whelen.. But that would be cause to open more Jack Daniels and get more firewood for that discusion...450

450, this on-going experiment you have is very interesting. You must have a tighter chamber and barrel to get the velocities you're getting. It may come to a choice of either a 9.3 anything or a 404 Jeff when the time comes.

475Guy... As I mentioned before, it seem's the more I learn, the less I knew! This season in Zim, my heavy gun will be my Dakota .450 my light rifle is my trusty and worn Sako Safari in .375 H&H.. Most would think that my hunt combo is very strange indeed. But works very well in a mixed game area with both Dangerous and plains game.. I think even in a plains game only hunt I would still use only my .375 and leave everything else at home. They are much more useful than most give credit for. I was lucky enough after a very tuff chase/stalk with several blown chances to take a nice Sable at exactly 300yds (bushnell range finder afterwards) but still handy enough to take my Impala at 50yds. The Sako's glass is a Lepould 1 3/4 - 6X with heavy reticule.. The Dakota only carries qtr rib express sights.... As you mentioned, I might have to give serious thought one day of exchanging the .375 for a 9.3 as my light rig... My dream tho, is to one day hunt Africa with original classics.. Thats where the .404 Jeff comes in that you mentioned..450

Hauptjager, My data came straight from Hodgen powder company's website.... Bullet:286gr.Woodleigh Powder:Varget-59.0 Case:Norma Primer:Federal 210. Velocity 2385fps. Factory Velocity 2310fps. Pact chronograph at 8ft. This saturday I will be trying it out with the new glass bedding. I also had a Dead Mule mercury reducer laying around doing nothing, so I milled a slot in the forend and glassed that in also. Should be an interesting day.. 450

450, Your formula sound like a winner. The Idea of a Dead Mule in the forend sounds like a great way to tame that pussycat of yours. Please let me know who it works out. I should think that aside form the sound and the hole in the target you will not know that you fired. By the way about how much weight does the Dead Mule add to the front of you rifle?

Hauptjager, I fired up the Dillon press and cranked out 100rnds of 9.3X62 with the 286gr Woodleigh. I bumped up my load 3 tenths of a grain, to Varget-59.3 just to move my velocity up to an even 2400fps (It just sounds better than 2385fps) After glass bedding and glassing in the mercury, I really got lucky on this one. I shot 3 groups at 3/4" 1 group just over 1/2" I must replace this horrible trigger. A few other groups would have been spectacular but I would launch one round 1/2"- 3/4 from the group. I sighted her in 2" high at 100yds it gave me an exact 200yds zero (I mean dead nuts center) at 250yds it dropped 4.5" at 300yds it dropped 10" It is plain to see that this is where the .375 H&H takes over with a much extended range and knock down.. But all in all, I am highly impressed by both cartridge and shorty rifle.. Oh-yes, the mercury reducer did make a very noticeable difference even more comfortable than before. I removed the stock to see what weight Dead Mule reducer I used, but unfortunatly when installing I had it turned and I can't see the weight. (accra-glass is somewhat transparent) It is the size for rifle forend if that helps you... Good luck with your CZ..

450, sounds like you’re getting some very nice performance. When you say that you need to change the trigger, what trigger do you have? The one I use had the factory single set trigger and I have to say that I have never user a sweeter trigger. The pull is as smooth a hot butter, and when “set” a mouse fart will set her off… very nice for the way I like to shout.

Is “accra-glass” relative new? The only glass I have experience is … I can not think of the name… is a brown “wood” color epoxy like resin. Is the accra-glass better” Thanks for the campfire chat!

Hauptjager: It has the factory double set trigger.. I feel it sets the trigger too far forward in placement. It needs to be further back towards the rear of the gaurd. I have the adjustment all the way out disabling the set system, which in turns allows the trigger to reside further back. even then I feel its still a bit forward and feels mushy with about a 4lb pull.... Accura-Glass has been Brownell's claim to fame for a zillion years for glass beddding stocks.. 450
