Recoil pads... for a custom gun... what is period exceptable
      #135633 - 19/05/09 07:28 AM

I'm building my 1st double rifle... I've chosen a triple lock Husqvarna side by side for the action... I like the pistol grip butt stock, but the gun has a steel butt plate... the gun is an exposed hammer gun, & I'd like it to appear "stock" or period when finished... what was / is available for butt pads ???

I've got links to a couple guys that do lace on leather butt cuffs, is something like that my best bet, or what other options do I have ???

thanks for any suggestions

It's hard to go wrong with the classic orange (red) Silvers Pad. You can buy them in several sizes from CSMC. They were and are standard fare on many Best guns and certainly fit the billing as a "period correct" pad. It's a solid rubber pad that's easy to grind to the perfect shape and also makes for a perfect base for wrapping in leather.

Thanks for the reply...

something like this ???

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=970496

doesn't look real nice, but if it would be as original, covering it with a leather but cuff would be ok...

That's the one! You can get an original Silvers' Pad through CSMC. The pad shown in the link you posted only looks that way because it still needs to be fitted and ground down. There's overlapping rubber around the black backing that goes away very easily. The buffing will darken the color and, after you condition it, it will darken nicely with a classic sheen. Even the pads installed by the best gun houses look like the one pictured before it gets worked down.

looks better in person ( installed ) I assume the one I linked has plugs to cover the screw holes... but as far as cosmetics, I'd probably put the leather butt cuff on...

I'm with you Daryl S, I love skeleton butt plates. On the big calibres I have a "doctored"
pact recoil pad. It slips into a hidden "pocket" on the inside of a hunting leather waist coat
I have, works a treat. best, Mike

Hears the same as sold by MIDWAY.
Similar to a Silvers but not as hard.
Silver can be bought via Kynoch.
