Australia seasons?
      #135625 - 19/05/09 04:49 AM

Hi guys,

Your postings really got me thinking of a hunting trip to Australia!
What are the seasons, especially for water buffalo and sambar?
How about the cull hunts (camel, donkey); what time of year is it reasonable to hunt, and is there a specific season for these hunts?

More determined by Weather than anything else for what you have mentioned. Too damn hot / humid up North Oct - March

Buffalo - April / May to October, maybe early November

Culls - again, weather, April / May to October, maybe early November

Sambar - All year, but mainly April - November is when people hunt them.

BTW - You'll probably need to spend some time getting a Sambar, they are damn hard to get.

Lars

September to November starts to get hot in the Top End, especially October and November. July and August are the more comfortable months. There is no "season" as such other than weather conditions and if using an outfitter when they operate.

Cull hunts can be done anytime depending on the area. Inland hunts if not in the "tropics" for example. Summer can be very hot. Donkey culls etc, some outfitters such as Hunt Australia do them as special hunts and can be booked. Matt Graham has just headed North for the hunting 'season' and they do they too. He is listed here on NE.com

Sambar in the Top End are rare. I know I looked for them all the time when hunting the Cobourg Peninsula but not much chance of sighting one. Sambar in the Victorian highlands can be hunted all year round. The cooler months are better. Some of the public lands available to hunting are locked during some months but can be walked in. Others are open all year. Some outfitters may be able to help with a sambar hunt in the wild. Most sambar taken by foreign clients are probably taken in fenced hunting areas however.

August is my favourite month.

That doesnt stop you from hunting free range with some of the better sambar hunting outfits in Victoria.
I personally dont condone canned hunts.

Thanks - I sorta gathered this from a post @ Accuratereloading.com (or was it on this forum?) where someone listed the number of game animals available.
Given the size of the country, too, I'd be a tad surprised if there were much other limitations than the climate and a prohibition to shoot females with small ones.

Hm, this kind of timing could essentially double the season... First Australia, then Africa, then Europe and then one could rest in the spring before the roe season kicks in... All that is needed is some of the old Phoenician invention that is always fashionable, and that poor people refer to as "money".

- Lars

PS. Why do you guys get all the fun? You already have sun, pretty topless girls and a high standard of living. Do you really have to keep this much game, too???

Don't forget new Zealand as well.

If you come to Australia, you might as well go there.

Some very good animals to shoot over there.

I would agree with JH on this one Nige.

W Valley has them

Mary R station has them

Sentosa? hmmm not sure on that one

But there are other places that one never hears of including some 'private' places that cater for the quick option or is that the easy option.

River Gums Estate just could be one.

I didn't say in Victoria but was thinking of the NT, eg Mary River.

The simple facts are that it is unlikely unless one is extremely lucky, or an outfitter has done a lot of scouting before to have a good chance of taking a good sambar trophy if a hunt of 3 to 5 days on free chase sambar deer.

On the other hand at WV and I presume other places there is probably a reasonable chance, though I have never seen a good or big trophy sambar at WV, though I never looked for them.

Allan is right. Of course foreign visitors can hunt sambar in the wild, free chase, guided or unguided, in the Vic mountains, the ideal way it should be done.
