Turkeys, coyotes and prairie dogs...
      #135578 - 18/05/09 09:39 AM

Was able to get out this weekend for a couple days of fun...

Between shooting 132 prairie dogs, was able to get these two as well...fun was had by all, with the exception of the prairie dogs, turkey and coyote...

The turk had a 10 1/4 inch beard...

Those turkeys should be good eating for sure!

We were out today in the hilly ranch country back behind the bay. There were mobs of turkeys were on the road everywhere.

I'd thought a couple times of going for a grille or bumper shot, just to spice the dinner table up for tonight...

Looks like you had a good time.

Cheers

Outstanding, Ripp!! It sounds like you had a great weekend! Nice looking turkey. By the way, how did you get that coyote to sit still and pose like that while you took his photo?

I hypnotized him….had him stare at a 50gr Hornady until he felt sleepy…

Read in this months new FIELD AND STREAM, a study done shows coyote mortality at about 80% of fawn deaths...read another study about a year ago in another magazine that suggested 90% by coyotes..which is the biggest reason we kill them at every opportunity...plus its fun..

RIPP:

Was that study done in an area with other large predators?

Reason I ask is that as you know, we have yotes, bear, cougar and of course, wolves. It's a wonder that any fawns survive.

I find live babies all the time, I can't imagine it is very hard for predators to find them. Just yesterday my son found a turkey nest full of eggs.

A study in the Lochsa some years ago linked black bear to severe elk calf depredation and was instrumental in the increase to a 2-bear limit in some Units.
