Engraving, English scroll, who/where/how much money?
      #135510 - 17/05/09 03:45 AM

Am considering having some engraving done on a boxlock, English scroll only (not sure if this is considered large or small English scroll? WOULD LIKE IT TO BE SAME AS overall COVERAGE AND ENGRAVING STYLE AS FOUND ON LANCASTER boxlock PICTURED ON PAGE 93 OF DOUBLE GUN JOURNAL, v 11, I 4, WINTER, 2000, if you have access to that picture), but have no idea whom to seek for estimates. What country and what engraver would possibly give me best price, with good engraving results, and how do I contact that engraver?

I thought of doing that once.

Don't you have to unharden the gun first to engrave it and then re harden it as the metal is too hard to engrave properly ?

That's what I think i was told anyway.

Some of the best I have seen has been done by Ken Hurst of NC. 910-221-5288 It won't be cheap but it will be the best available.

You are correct 500. If the peice is correctly hardened and the hardening has not worn through over the years then it would have to be annealed.

Bramble

Thanks.

I was told that an engraver can engrave it, but they can't get an even run on the metal - as well as being damn hard !!!

The result of not getting an even run is mistakes can be made.

The process involves complete strip of the action and annealing among many other steps along the way.

Mr Hurst is an excellent craftsman, another highly qualified American engraver for Brit scroll is Barry Lee Hands.
Google him for his contact information.

Ken and Barry are friends, and will be perfectly straight with you on the process, timeline, and price.
It's also probable that they would offer other references and/or craftsmen for you to consider.

Cheers
