The sweet smell of success.

Regulation load found for my 1885 Alex Henry double on the third try. I'm happy. 450-400 BPE. 250 grain cast flat nose bullet with 34.2 grains of 4198 with 3 grains of dacron filler at 50 yds. Iron sights and old eyes.

Very nice indeed.

About what velocity are you getting?

And by the way, with that group who cares about old eyes!

Well, as long as that bullet runs faster than the bear you are good to go!!

Post the roast!

Mike-

Right the frick on!
Do well on the bear.

When you get back and are taking a break from butchering your bear, ask for my balsamic reduction recipe.
You can substitute Port or some other sweet wine for the balsamic in the reduction pan if your local pantry is out of stock.
You won't regret it.

Cheers

Very nice grouping. I wonder if a load like that might have any application for plinking with a modern NE 450/400?

casper50:
That's the same type of groups I got out of my Rigby hammer 450-400. 255 grain lead but I was using 44 grains of 4198. Was your 34 grain load a typo? I was getting 1.3 to 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards and I bet your gun will do the same. Is your Alex Henry a hammer or hammerless underlever? Good shooting, my friend.

A hammer underlever. I just received an email from Dickson that said it was a "best gun" made in 1879.

Now that's a nice rifle! I'd say best gun adequately describes it! Does Dickson have the records for Alex Henry? If so, what is the charge? I have two I'd like to have them research. Thanks,

Dutch

I'd try as Dutch did and keep experimenting with your fine rifle. 44gr. 4198 sounds much better to me, however the 34gr. should work on black bears OK.

I'd think your velcoity should be in the 1,300fps to 1,450fps range, not higher than that.

I don't have COTW handy so don't know what the factory speeds were for that round, but that's what I'd strive for.

I would think 44gr. should move that light 250gr. out somewhere in the 1,700 to 1,750fps range.

By the way Dickson said it was made in 1879 not 1885.

Alex the load was the same as above. I haven't had much time to go to the range lately. The bullet went in the left side forward of the second to last rib, went out the far shoulder breaking the leg. The bear went 20 yds. Good thing, in the rain there was no blood trail.
