Kodiak...first blood!
      #135320 - 14/05/09 02:22 AM

Well, I have been posting pics of my rifles for a while and I kept getting messages from our friend Martin asking when I am actually going to shoot one of them. I promised Martin that I would take my Kodiak out and shoot it and then hunt with it. My shooting it in consisted of two shots at a coke can at about 25 yards. Perfect hog distance according to my guide. The gun shot a few inches high using the lowest leaf on the sight, which I expected being that close. The point of aim was in line with the can for both shots. Some some other exotics while cruising around for hogs. I told the guide that I really didn't want to use the dogs or tree stand, but would prefer a stalk. He said that the dogs would be a good way to start the stalk and maybe see if anything was in the vacinity. The dogs were working some woods behind us, when I spoted a nice hog sneaking through the thicket ahead of us. We started on our stalk and eventually caught the hog crossing a large field. He said, "here is your chance for your first trophy hog" . The hog was about 125-150 yards across the field along a fenceline. I cocked the right hammer and let one fly. The hog dropped straight to the ground which surprised me and the guide. What surprised us even more is that it got back on its feet and came towards us, but I don't think it had much life left in it. I let the left barrel rip and bowled him over in the field. The dogs heard shots and finally showed up to give the dead hog a sniff. All in all a good day. I pulled the trigger, the Kodiak went bang (a good thing) and hit its mark. Hog is about 200 pounds, with nice cutters. Not a moster, but my first kill in 20 years. Still exciting!

Tarawa:
Great story and good shooting. Congrats.
That is a .45-70? Nice looking old boar.
I jsut missed one that my son shot at about a month ago. About the same size. He took off running at about 150 yards and I could not get the lead. just peppered his behind with dirt and rock.
congrats.

Well done. Is the pork now in your freezer as well? Perfect target for a Double rifle in .45/70.

Pork hams and shoulders in the freezer. Grilled the not-so-tenderloins yesterday. I guess wild hog is a little dry compared to store bought pork, so I have to adjust my culinary skills if I want to eat wild hog.

Tarawa, thanks for posting!

Great job and chops and roasts, well, can't be beat.

I wish we had pigs here.

Does that gun have two rear sights or is it regulated for one?

Very nice gun, too!

It is regulated. The gun is fitted with a classic three leaf express site. 100,200 and 300 yards, whick I think is pushing the limits of the 45-70 and definately my eyes!
My two black powder Kodiaks also have a similar set-up. Two sights for distance distances only.

Thanks for the pix.

Years ago, didn't they used to sell the Black Powder rifle as "two rifles in one" or something like that, with the barrels not regulated, but each barrel sighted with a different rear sight? I seem to remember that in the advertising specs. It has been a while, and I could be wrong.

You are correct about that. I remember seeing the same adds, but I believe that was the CVA version of the Kodiak.

Hi,
I think that CVA dobles were made in Spain, not by Pedersoli.

DB: Do you have a picture of your rifle?

How do you like it, and can you give us a cost?

Thanks.

I also have one of the CVA's. I have had it for about 5-6 years now. Bought it at a pawn shop on a whim. It is .50 cal. Has the folding adjustable Lyman tyle sights in a short rib as photo from Tarawa. I paid about $150 US. I have yet to pull the trigger on a cap and load for the rifle. It is on the list.
It is very muzzle heavy and this one had a shortened stock. I have lengthened it. I will photo and show when I get it to the range.
