Cheap Double
      #134579 - 06/05/09 02:37 AM

I have been saving my pennies for a nice double for quite some time, but when my wife called me from the garage where her truck was being looked at, a chunk of my gun money disapeared into thin air! Her truck is 20 years old, so I guess that since she didn't want a new one and just wanted hers running, it was a better deal for me to fix it.
I was checking on Gunbroker and saw a 45-70 Pedersoli going pretty cheap, so I impulse bought it. I know that the purists say that the 45-70 is a toy, but I can't wait to get it in my hands. I hurried up and ordered a leather case from Jeff's Outfitters and also all the goodies that go with it.
All in all, a pretty double that I can use here in the states for under $2k, still seems like a bargain to me.

This gun is supposedly unfired, but was purchased by the guys recently deceased father in 1998. It has browned barrels. Would it be from Trail Gun Armory? It is in transit to my FFL now.

tarawa,

Nice rifle! No need to apologize for getting a 45-70, I personally think it's a great load. I've owned a .458 Win Mag, .458 Lott and a 375 H&H and my 45-70 double kicks evey bit a much and appears to do just as much damage! I also bought mine on-the-cheap and I love it, and just like you - I currently have higher priorities than spending 9 months pay for an English double (like putting braces on the kids, paying the mortgage, or staying married! ) I love your gun - now get over to Africa and kill something with it!

Martin,
In my antique collecting days, my signature was:

Collector and Purveyor of Fine Antiquities, Historical Artifacts ........and Junk!

Now you see where my taste is!

But I love my Baikals and Pedersolis! When one collected Japanese WWII rifles his whole life, any double is a work of art to me!

The early TGA's were marked "Trail Guns Armory" , some of the later ones just had "Pedersoli" on them.
I got mine in the late 80's or early 90's can't recall at the moment, its an age thing
Edit: my compadre tells me it was 1990 and I didn't pay that much, --You were cheap--- the nerve

Well done on your first purchase of a double.

Hey, we may hang shit on the 45/70, but if it gets you
into your first double at low cost, all well and good.

Have fun !!!

The gun shot well, and as i have posted in the past, went through being a -70,-90 and ended as a 45-120.
Always shot well.
Wish I had not sold it.

That's a great buy. You're going to like that rifle. It's really practical for most North American game, and fun as heck for plinking.

Mine is obviously over-priced if you got yours for under $2k! You have nothing to cry about.

Curl,
I believe it was just a case of the one I got was poorly represented and did not attract many bidders.

NitroX is spot-on. That is a nice looking rifle and one I'd like to own for guiding or general hunting here.

Is the regulation adjustable as in the Baikals?

No Sir!

You have a wonderful big-bore double rifle; I have three hammer-guns, one being a .458 caliber. With a 400 lead solid you have one deadly round.

Good for you on that find!

I ended up getting an all leather case from Jeffs for a little more than the price of a canvas case. These leather cases were apparently left over from when the store was alled Cape Outfitters. Great deal, since the other canvas and leather cases are on backorder.

I've got one in 9.3X74R. It's shoots fine and I'm happy with the regulation. My only gripe is the tubes are too heavy.
You'll like your's!

My FFL received the gun yesterday and was totally impressed with the quality. Unfortunately, I am out of town and cant pick it up for a few days. He also warned me that they would show me no mercy if I happen to wander over to Lion Country Safari (which is practically walking distance from my property)and try for the Big 5 there!
In the past 10 years, there have been several lions and tigers loose in the neighborhood...escapees from some of the local big cat fanciers. I will be ready to lend a "helping hand" now.

It sounds like you got a great deal.
Good job!

Shoot it and let us know how it runs for you.
There's a good chorus of other guys with experience on this particular model of rifle to help you on to success in loading for it - you couldn't be in a better position with where you've landed on you new rifle purchase.

At the price you've paid, you don't have to worry about losing the value of your cash either - a running example of this rifle doesn't typically sit on the market for long for that kind of money.

Cheers

Tarawa,

I got mine from TGA in 1990, but mine has
two adjustable, foldable sights inline on
the rib. Your larger sight base with three
leaves is so cool. I wish mine had that.
My barrels are browned as are yours.

I had to send mine back to Mike Powasnick
because the left firing pin didn't line up
to strike the primer properly. He repaired
it and did some other things since there
was still some layout or high spot blue
around the extractors. They did dribble
a bit of what is probably the solvent to
remove said blue on the stock.

If yours is like mine, the bores and chambers
are chromed. It is a nice gun and a lot of fun.
I will never get to own a Heym PH, let alone
a Rigby or H&H. I am grateful to have my
Kodiak MK IV. At least I have the joy
of owning a shootable double rifle.

Get that gun out to the range and take it hunting.
You will have double barrels of fun! I just made
that up all by myself. :-)

Bwana Dave

P.S.

I just wrote this reply to a cast bullets thread.

"I am going to be loading cast bullets in
my double rifle, a Trail Guns Armory
Kodiak MK IV in .45/70.

I've had it since 1990 but only loaded the
405 gr Remington JFP. I was told it was set
up for (they don't hand regulate) for a 300
grain bullet. These crossfired badly. It
likes the 405 grainers and shoots a 2" group
at 50 yds for 5 rounds from each barrel.

I bought a box of 1,000 of the Remington
slugs way back when I could get free shipping
but now want to try hard cast lead.

I have some Beartooth 405, 425, 450, and 525
grainers on order but Beartooth is usually
backlogged. I just ordered some 460 grain
Cast Performance from Midway which were in stock.

I'll be glad to share anything I learn with
the forum."

Bwana Dave
