Turkeys and Kids

Last weekend I was sick as a dog. Really sick Saturday, then feeling a wee bit better Sunday. Enough to make Sonny a holster for his new sixgun. Barely enough.

Whilst I was at it, he headed up the mountain and called in a nice gobbler {body-size-wise, the beards don't often get alot of length here due to deep heavy snow; freeze/melt breaks them off}.

He came back all fired up, excited to show off the bird.

He says, "Dad, get your gun and I'll call you in one, too".

I says, "I'm sick".

He says, "Don't be a fag".

I says, "Give me a few minutes to get my gun".

We head up, and I'm out of breath and feeling the rumbling in the tummy again for the 47th time in the last two days...

He starts stroking the call. He's pretty good at it.

He says, "I hear one!"

I says, "No way, they headed up the mountain further!" I strike off up the mountain.

He says, "Get back here, THERE they are!!!!!"

I jog back. I says, "WHERE???"

He says, "Off the cliff below, RIGHT THERE!!!!!"

I says, "I don't see them!!!" {He's taller than me...}

He grabs me between the shoulder blades and SHOVES me over a blowdown and I stumble and bumble my way off the side of the bank.

Ah................THERE!!!

Gun goes up, bird goes down!

Thanks Sonny, my tummy feels a bit better now!!

Well done.

How do you shoot a turkey, aim for the head or body?

How do you cook them, like a domestic turkey roasted or ?

Congrats to you and Sonny...sounds like he is the perverbial "chip off the old block"...

Been planning to go for turks for 2 weeks now--it won't quite snowing/raining long enough to get down the road where I plan to go...

You been out looking for bear yet??

We have seen a few but youngsters to this point...

Thanks fellows.

As for shots, it depends on the load.

Since we switched to the English BB's/US #1's, we hold on the head up close and "shoulder" farther away. We hunt turkeys completely unorthodoxly in the fall. We locate them, stalk close to 60 or 80 yards, and on a "count of 3" bolt out of cover and sprint for the birds and pick one and kill it either on the ground or in the air if it flies. I've never heard of this hunting method before but it is very effective and successful. We've killed many turkeys.

When he was telling his buddies about how we hunt them, my son was called a liar and worse at college till he brought a kid along with him last year and showed him how it's done. Now the kid is "coverted"...except he needs to hit the track and run off some blubber so he can keep up with the sprint!!

The loads we use will kill with one or two pellets in the body.

Most fellows sit and call. We do that in the spring when calling is effective. I've never had a lot of luck with it in the fall except to locate a flock.

We have plucked and skinned birds, baked them, stewed, fried, casseroles, etc. Most of the time we skin them and cook them in a crock pot OR my wife has a gauze cloth she covers them in and that is basted with butter and spices.

The "bucks" run about 20 pounds, the "does" about 10.

RIPP: Yes, the snow/rain mix has been a pain.

Haven't seen a bear. Have only one bait set, about a mile from the house, but I don't expect much from it. We'll see. My dogs even love the bait, so maybe I'll shoot a yote off it!!! ???
