How to Shoot a Cat off someone.
      #133944 - 30/04/09 08:41 AM

Ok, with 'The Punki Incident' fresh on just about every hunting/shooting forum on the Net, how (or do) you shoot a Cat off someone ? Be it Lion or Leopard ?

I read/heard a long time ago that the method was to hold your rifle low and parrallel to the ground with the muzzle at the height of the aggrieved cat, walk up to it and then fire. The theory being that the trajectory of the projectile is parrallel with the ground and less, I stress less, likely to hit someone prone under the cat.

Should this be done by just the PH ?

Also what precautions should someone take who is being mauled ?

Lets learn from this incident .

I think the rule is simple: Don't shoot until you are sure your bullet will not strike a human.

Personally I don't want a .300 win mag through my spine, but that's just me.

A PH I have hunted with --Ian Gibson---was here at my house this past winter--believe I posted some photos on this site of a leopard attach in which he had shot a leopard off of a fellow ph last summer in Zim.

He basically reiterated what was stated above..he placed the barrel to the cats head and pulled the trigger...periold...dead leopard...

Not casting any judgement on anyone..but do believe this would save both a lot of medical bills as well as bullets...

I reckon the suggestions here make alot of sense.

When my then 14-year-old kid killed the bear that was at my ankles {and me with an empty gun}, he had the presence of mind to dive over me and shoving the muzzle into the critter before cutting loose with the final round.

Thank God he didn't sort of stand back and have a whack at the damn thing from behind me.

Easier said than done.

Walking up to the leopard is quite likely to get the leopard to transfer to you as well. There have been cases where up to four or five guys have been mauled by the same leopard.

But if making the shot count and shooting to miss the human attached to the leopard means getting close, I guess that is what is required.

Point to make is that there is no such thing as a zero-risk strategy.
We do what seems best to us at the time.

There is a case in which a victim of a lion attack attempted to grab the cat by the tongue. When his would-be rescuer shot the lion in the head (memory says that a .243 was used)from the side, the resulting damage to the hand required its amputation.

Still better than being dead.

Yes, he does. We have gone through many adventures together, and I learned to respect him long before that incident, but after it my respect for him has only grown!

(posted this elsewhere )

Carefully and thoughtfully of course; that is as thoughtfully and carefully as you can in 2.75 seconds,--- or not.

That is: everyone reacts differently under stress, none of us know until we are there.
Shoot or don't shoot based upon your training preparation and instinct; and pray your choice works out.

Brings us back to preparedness, situational awareness and appropriate gun handling being incumbent on us if we choose to hunt DG.

Discussion of roles and a plan of action prior to the hunt are necessary to create the mindset for hopefully an eventuality that does not occur.

Then the chips will fall as they may with good or bad results in spite of our training, preparation, skill, intent or judgment.

All accidents are avoidable , I was taught when I was flying; but sometimes only if you choose not to fly.

I don't think it's practical to walk up close to a leopard under such circumstances. I think I would shoot the leopard from a good bit away.

No disrespect to anyone here, but I like this thread and compare it to the BB thread.

Shoot from close or faraway or with the muzzle against the leopard's head ? Different opinions on that alone.

Sage advice such as "shoot carefully" and "shoot so it doesn't hit a human being". Obvious!

Using the other thread as well - "don't shoot unless you know the exact position of every single person in your group, seen or unseen."

Not knocking anyone but all this illustrates the variability of such a situation of high stress, noise, movement and the need for EXTREMELY quick decisions and perhaps skill, in an incident which might take one to three seconds.

Maybe all clients should advise - "run away" - as many actually do.
(only joking of course)

from the other thread - an example of shooting a leopard that is attacking someone:

Quote:

Here is a nice video of a leopard attacking a client. The PH yells for the client to try to get clear, and the PH holds his fire until he is sure he will not hit the client.

I doubt Ian leisurely walked up to it.
more like his quick shuffle.
