405 Winchester double question
      #133659 - 27/04/09 09:17 PM

I have just bought a SIMSON WERK .405 double. Unfortunatley it won't get here for 4-8 weeks. What was the standard European load for the .405 double? I've heard that it was a fairly popular chambering. I know the standard in Americas was/is the 300 grain. Thanks

I have seen English doubles regulated for the 300gr. bullet with 52gr. Cordite.
Sounds like a decent load to me.

Good choice for a wide variety of game. Once the rifle is 'in hand', it will be quite interesting to find out it's rifling twist.

I'll be using it for brown bear, black bear and moose here in Alaska.

That would be a very good load no doubt! The only fly in the ointment is Cordite is not available!

First I would slug the barrels to find out the exact bore dia. It is most likely a .411 dia, but you will not know unless you slug the barrels. When you get the rifle take the barrels off and look at the proof marks on the bottom of the barrels. It should be stamped with the proof load for Cordite. There should be a stamping like: 300 gr MAX This is the bullet weight it was regulated with. So if it was regulated with 52 grs cordite, and a 300 gr bullet, you can convert this to Re-15 by a formula of: Cordite load X 1.19= an equivelent load of RE-15 powder. with this powder there will be a lot of airspace left in the long case, so you will have to fill that airspace with enough dacron fiber fill between the powder and the base of the bullet so that the filler is slightly compressed when the bullet is seated. DO NOT LEAVE THIS FILLER OUT!

55.0 grs of varget with a 300 gr hornady rn bullet (.411) will yeald you 2079 fps.

What I would do first is buy a box of new Hoenady factory ammo and see how it regulates in the rifle!
.....................Good luck, and welcome to the DRSS

Why not use a powder that fills the case, instead of one where you have to use filler - and the slight chance you might just forget one day ?

I reload for a few old British doubles and haven't found a powder that will fill the case and still be safe to shoot. If you know of one let me know. I always have to fill with dacron.

I reload for 10 - 15 doubles and I WON'T use a powder
where I have to use a filler.

I just change to another ADI powder and find a load that shoots.

By "fill", it doesn't have to fill the case, just enough that I don't have to use a filler.

I don't have a 450 No 2 or those big cases but I do have 500's, 470's, 450's etc etc.

Cordite is still manufactured in India and they want to export it. That said, I'm not sure why anyone would want to import it except for nostalgic reasons?

Check the manuals - there is lots of .405 data available now - I think some of it with pressure data.

Here is a starting point from Hogdon's online data center:

Also the current Hornady factory Spire point 300gr loads have done well on the big piggies.

I really like the .411 Swifts (seasonally produced, not in the online order form, write and ask)
I also like the Heavy Jacket Hawks(400gr .050 jacket)
With the 400gr bullet my gun likes XMR-4064 and Re-15(obviously not in the Table Below)
