Booster for Zeiss V 5-15x42 orDialyt/Classic 10x40?
      #133496 - 25/04/09 10:55 PM

I'm considering a "booster" to mount on either my riflescope or my binoculars.

It's primary use will be hunting, to asess game at longer distances.

Has anyone used these? (Particulary the zeiss type)

Is it any useful, or am I better off with a spotting scope?

Any suggestions are welcome!

I have Swarovski 10 x 42 bino`s and have been wanting a 'doubler' to take them to 20 x for a long time...$419 USD atm so I am waitng for a boost in the AUD.

I reckon they are the way to go instead of lugging a s/scope about, well for my hunting anyway,a simple screw on screw in principle takes seconds..

Way to go!

That's what i figured out too.

But, there is a big but to the whole thing..:

Light transmission? Is it "good enough"?

When down on the riverflats glassing the slopes for chammy, thar or deer I find my self wanting a booster on the rifle, as i need my binos for glassing further along the faces.
However, my binos gather a lot more light than the scope, beeing fixed power and less lenses, so I suppose the best results of a booster comes along with the binos?

Its not much use in high magnification if it's impossible to asess the trophy potential due to bad light transmission?

That little booster looks nice to have in the pocket when climbing, coupled with a light kipplauf... [/list]

I had a booster for my Swarovski's in 10x42's---key word there being "had"...used it one season and sold it...

Perhaps its just me--but I did not like it for many of the reasons already described...much, much rather have my spotting scope---than the booster---

With the booster and the added magnification, my experience was you pretty much needed to put them on a tripod to hold them steady enough to judge game at a long distance---field of view was not what I experience in a spotting scope either...

Again, these are "my" experiences and perhaps others may find it different...think it is handy to have along to use once in a while but IMHO, does NOT take the place of a good spotting scope..one that you will look through hours of a day spotting game at distance...

As ripp said it wont take the place of a SS but that little double at times should come in a lot handier in the hard climb or dawn till dark hunts situations than an 80mm SS.

One of the main reasons I have one in mind (besides the doubling) is for my long walks in thick bush broken at times by the more open longer cross ridge situations for a quick assessment of the possible shot.

It is Chalk n cheese comparing light transmission between the larger objective bell SS`s and 40 odd mm bino OL`s though.

A friend of mine uses the same combo of 10x42EL and the booster. He loves it - I haven't taken the leap yet. For the odd quick spot then I can see its advantages, but for serious long distance glassing I would go with a bigger pair of bins (like some of the 15x or 18x image stabilised models or a spotting scope. If you can get a deal on an second hand doubler then I would try it out. What about a folding stalking telescope?
