Thanks Steve,

The Young Bloke and I went to the traditional Dawn service and then retired to the local Golf and Bowling club for a traditional (Lots of Traditions) RUM and Breakfast with the Ex-Diggers and local dignataries. The young bloke struggled to finish the rum but got there. He wore his Grandfathers medals from WWII and I wore my grandfathers medals from WWI as well as my own service decorations.

We did notice a marked thinning of the ranks among the diggers, but a lot of Gen Y turning up for the memorial service. Sometimes I think we sell the younger generations a bit too short.

too true. (lest we forget the errors of politicians who sent tham : omitting WW2 (as it was a noble cause)

Doesn't apply to all officers (and politicians) in all wars but it does apply to most officers (and politicians) in most wars.

There's also some stunning books been written about the Gallipoli campaign. If I remember correctly, Colleen Mc Cullough's novel, 4 fires has a lot of content based on the campaign.

Those blokes went through absolute hell and (as I understand it) the guys in charge were largely a bunch of bloody idiots.

I'm sure our Aussie brethren will be able to shed a better and more interesting light on whole story.

My grandfather served as an Infantry re-inforcement to Gallipoli, landing in May. He lasted 6 weeks before being evacuated with enteric fever (Typhoid). He told us that he remembers wakeing up in Alexandria (Egypt) and that the only vegetable they had for 6 weeks was Turnips. He went on to serve in europe on the Western front where far more Australians and New Zealanders lost their lives.

Gallipoli was an incredible military failure, but has come to symbolise our (Australian and NZ) birth as a nation where we could independently say, we did that, without the shadow of another world power falling over us.

It should not have the importance that it does. As humans we mark events with ceremonies and ANZAC day has become a ceremony for New Zealanders and Australians.

My son plans to be the fourth generation of regular army enlistees. It is just something that we appreciate as a nation of convicts who have had to build everything from scratch, starting with nothing and then having to prove ourselves, every step of the way, militarily and culturally.

The original ANZAC day ceromony was for the purpose of remembering and honouring those who served and particulalrly those who died in War.

I see a disturbing trend for commercialisation sneaking in, with many Australians now equating ANZAC day with the sporting (footbal) competitions that use the name. These games only became part of the "ANZAC Tradition" in the past 20 years, while the ANZAC Day service dates back to 1916. Interestingly, by the time sport became an important part of the day the games had been bought and payed for by big media, who seek any opertunity to increase profits.

Traditionaly ANZAC Day has been a public holiday, celebrated on the 25th of April. Unlike other Australian public holidays, ANZAC day never saw an alternate day off provided when it fell on a weekend, due to the importance of the day, the date, and the meaning behind the ceremonies, it was always celebrated on the day. This year teachers demanded and got the Monday off for ANZAC Day because it fell on a Saturday.

Australians have always had a tendancy to gamble, and under the stresses and boredom of war this became something of an obsession. Australia's game of choice was 2-up, played by fliping two coins from a flat wooden stick. Bets are taken on the coins landing the same way up (evens) or showing one head one tail (odds). The coins (traditionaly two pennies) were marked with a cross on one side to make it easier for those watching and making side bets to see the result. This game was illegal, but was permited on ANZAC day some years ago. Since that time it has moved from a game largely run by the crowds to an organised game that increases the profits of those venues running it, usualy hotels and clubs. The profits from other gambling such as horse racing has also increased. In the past much of the profit was used in organising and running the day, now it seems to be more of a profit making excersise.

I am glad to see more people participating, but worry that it may become just another excuse for organisations to make profits while groups of hanger-on-ers use it as an excuse to get drunk and act in anti-social ways. .

^^^Yes BIB mate I agree in many parts of your post but you got it wrong with the teachers as they get a "student free day" at the opening day of each term as they ALWAYS DO to catchup up on the admin stuff etc.
My missus has spent the past 2 days marking some papers; being a result of poor govt resourcing of education over at least the last 30 years. That is; push as many as you can into the private system and leave the others as a "special needs". And now it's coming home to roost big time!
