Kynoch 500 Jeffery (CIP) Ammo in CZ 550
      #133387 - 24/04/09 10:54 PM

Anyone using Kynoch Factory 500 Jeffery (CIP) ammo in their CZ 550 Safari Classic 500 Jeffery's? I bought a 5 pack and it won't feed from the magazine or extract if I single feed it. It's probably my rifle (which I will have to send back to Triple River Gunsmithing) but if it's the ammo I would like to know.

Regards,

Chuck

Whilst not a CZ in .500 Jeffery, I have a rifle in that calibre that uses Kynoch ammunition, feeding did have to be set up initialy but works just fine, with staggered magazine column it feeds perfectly from both sides of the column with soft and solids, the Kynoch case is made to the current CIP standard and uses an industry standard in the woodleigh softs and solids so there should really be no ammo related feed problems.

It could well be your rifle needs some small amount of after work on it. The Jeffery calibre has an unfortunate reputation for being difficult to get to feed but once sorted the problems seem few, it does sound like a trip to a competent riflesmith is in order.

Good luck

Jonathan

African Outfitter Magazine

http://www.africanoutfitter.com/

Dec/Jan 2009 issue has a rather comprehensive article on the .500 Jeffrey/Schuler. Well worth getting a copy.

It states that there are a number of different chamberings and designs of ammunition. Some early ammo had a rebated rim and later ammo did not. The rebated rim seems to have had some feeding problems. With modern rifles with modern ammo one would hope that any differences have been eliminated.

I measured the 500 Jeffery Kynoch ammunition compared to my new Jamison brass (which I've heard functions very well in the CZ 550 500 Jeffery's). They are different. Shoulder angle, case head diameter, etc. so I'm sending it back to Midway.

I'll be calling the gunsmith this morning to see what ammunition he used to check feed/extraction etc.

I spoke to Harlan, he used Jamison brass loaded wiht Woodleigh solids to check feeding and extraction. He's sending me two dummy rounds. I measured the Kynoch compared to my Jamison brass and they're vey different. I sent the Kynoch ammo back to Midway. Hopefully all is well, I should know in a few days.

Thanks all,

Chuck

I got my dummy cartridges from Harlan (the gunsmith who did my conversion). Jamison brass, Barnes Banded 570g solids. They feed, chamber and extract fine. So I'm going to use them as my template for my handloads. If it feeds and extracts the Barnes solids, it should be awesome with Woodleighs.

Thanks all, I'll post a range report in a bit once my press is all set up and I can make it to the range.

Hello! I hope you can resolve this very bad problem! I had the same with a custom rifle caliber 340WM! The last solution was to use a fired case for the factory of special's reloading tool's by Triebel in Germany, only for my rifle! What's kind of barrel do you use? There are difference between German and another barrels caliber 500Jeffery/12,7x70Schüler.

My barrel is a McGowen .510 caliber 1 in 10" twist, 24" long. I think my problems if not completely resolved will be very soon. Of course I bought RCBS 500 Jeffery CIP dies, folks told me those dies combined with the new Jamison brass and a CZ 550 are a winning combination. We'll know soon. I was very encouraged that it feeds with the Barnes solids though, the Woodleighs should feed easier. Hopefully I'll be on the range soon working up a nice load with the 535g Woodleigh softpoints I have lying on my bench ....

Well guys, I had to send my 500 Jeffery back to the gunsmith for a few tweaks (feeding and extracting). It's back now, feeds and extracts everything I can throw into it (Woodleigh softs, Barnes TSX, Barnes Banded Solids), a new rear sight is on too. I'm off to the range Friday, will file a range report with pics!

Thanks! Things went well. The rifle functioned as it should. I used loads on the light side (535g Woodleigh Soft Points at 2100 fps) to start out with. Since my range is under construction, I really couldn't sight it in today, so I only shot 10 rounds, 5 with irons and 5 with my Leupold 1.5 - 5x. Next time I'll load enough rounds to sight in both irons and the scope and shoot for groups and chronograph. Recoil was fine both offhand and from the bench, no shoulder bruises, no headaches, no eyebrow cut ...
