I've finally joined the ranks of combination owners, with a couple of sets of barrels for my Tikka with a set of 12 g / 7x65R barrels and a set of 12 g /.223 barrels. Still need to get them finally fitted by a gunsmith.

The Tikka is a Tikka 512SD.

I also received a set of .30-06 double rifle barrels.

I have at the moment only ONE set of Valmet/Tikka mounts. These will probably go on the .30-06 barrels. As while they are supposed to be QD, they are hardly QD with the screw off feature.

Now gentlemen, what do you suggest as a mounting system for a scope on the two combination sets of barrels.

I will be using the .223 set a lot at home, and really need a good 6x or 8x scope for it. But need quick access to the open "sights" for the shotgun.

Any suggestions?

Hinged mounts?

QD mounts which might fit the Valmet/Tikka?

Similar for the 7x65R set with 12g. I could probably handle this with open sights if needed.

I had a set of Tikka barrels re-chambered from 30-06 to 30 Super FM and had Talley spec bases milled on top. It was a GREAT set up...so I sold it...

At the outrageous price for a Tikka scope mount, you can get Talley type bases installed and a set of rings. They can keep the Valmet/Tikka mount-osaurous, IMO. The Talley set up is much lighter, and all you need for a second scope is another set of rings.

A good ideas there, milling the base in. Then a set of QD rings. Unlike a good quality rifle, no harm to its value except improving it!

What suggestions have you got for a new and better rear open sight for the double rifle barrels, or the combinations?

What about a couple of Aimpoint bases (weaver/pic. style) and then run whatever QD rings you want?

I see used 412 mounts/rings for around a hundred bucks from time to time, and they work very well. Yes they are heavy, but they are well made, and come back to zero every time.

I've got over 20 412 bbl sets and more than one 412 mount. The mounts work very well for me.

The mounts go for $250-$275...used these days! Talleys are the way to go now, IMO.

John,

So, you don't like the puny open sight set up?

They are real fragile and not the best design. The new ones on the Lothar Walther barrels are pretty good, but are still not great. I don't know of any quick fix.

Then you better keep looking, cause two of my friends have bought them in the last couple months used. One paid $95.00 and the other $105.00...

They were fortunate. I see them sell for $250-$275 all the time...used. I bid on 4-5 in the last six months, and none went for under $250.00. Your friends don't know lucky they were, and I'm glad they got the mounts for their true value. I bought all that Jeff Mayfield had a while back and all the rear sights he had. I got $200.00 for the mounts several years ago. I still have several rear sight blades. I sold all my Valmet/Tikka stuff over the last two years, except for one gun.

I had as many as 15 complete guns back then and many barrel sets. They helped pay medical bills.

Check the auctions and see what these mounts garner. It will curl your hair. I don't dispute what they claim to have paid; I do know what the market price is, also.

Any update on this?

Excuse my ignorance but how different is the Tikka 512 to the "Finnclassic" 512 that Hermmans Sporting Guns advertised they were importing, and any idea if the Finnclassic is still making it to our shores?

The new barrels need some minor gunsmithing to be fitted. Scope mounts etc including any gunsmithing still also needs to be done.

Was planning to use it with existing barrels in the next month or so, so can't afford to have it sitting with a gunsmith for six months "out of action" at the moment.

While looking for stuff on old threads, found this. A good idea well worth examining. I'd forgotten about it.

Valmet/Tikka mounts are now only on the second hand market. I believe Recknangel makes a mount.

Neither of these are "quick detachable". They are detachable but a screw knob may take a coin or screwdriver to turn. Not QD. One can't really quickly put on and off a scope to shoot a shotgun or the rifle barrel.

Talley bases killed and Talley rings might be a great option.

Combination guns are a compromise. Always have been, always will be. But they are incredibly useful.

No reason why you cannot use the shot barrel with the scope in place. Especially on ground game - rabbits, foxes etc. stationary / slow moving shots are no issue. Moving or flying shots practice is needed. Watch the target, concentrate on the target and point the gun keeping both eyes on the target and squeeze the trigger. A low powered scope helps, but surprising what you can do with a 6x scope.

Mine has a claw mount - monstrously expensive if having fitted these days - so easily removable, but if I am using it as a rifle then it stays on. I have shot plenty of things with shotgun barrel with the scope mounted, but mostly its close range foxes, squirrels etc.

If / when I go after birds, scope comes off and only shot barrel is loaded. (I don’t want to accidentally send a bullet into the next county when trying to shoot a duck). I always have a rifle cartridge in my pocket and can happily use the open sights if needs be. Or typically I go out for a Roe Deer, nothing turns up and then stop by duck pond on way home. I have also had no luck after a red stag, but are a few grouse in the heather - but never got close enough!

I am confident in the return to zero of the scope, so if needs be I can always replace it. But open sights good enough for 50 to 100m shots if needs be.

I really like the idea of the 412 system. It does give you lots of options and a very good travelling gun. With the 12 and 7x65r you pretty much can take anything. But you have a double shot and a double set of barrels if needs be.

I got excited by the aimpoint red cross hair dot ... Instead of the usual dot ... Then it became apparent the red cross hair is on the video camera on the rifle not the aimpoint .... Terrible filming, they hardly show the combination gun or the red dot sight nor the view through the sight.

I have used a few red dot sights and quite like them, although I do have a stigmatism and they do look like a star to me. There are various reticles that the likes of aimpoint offer and to be honest the shotcam image is not a bad representation of how it looks in real life.

In real life you do see the barrel through the sight.

I have put a 1-4x20 scope which just has a red reticle. I think I like it. But it is quite bulky compared to a little red dot sight. Image quality is better and more usable at 4x. But I think a little might be better option.

I use this scope for driven boar type shooting, and for practice I shoot clay targets with the shot barrel with scope mounted.
