Double rifle film, thumbs up!
      #13304 - 11/04/04 03:56 AM

For those who like to hunt everything with your double rifles, I just watched a film called "Death by Double Rifle" available from Outdoor Visions www.outdoorvisions.com ,or Big Bore Productions www.bigboreproductions.com
It is little over 1 hour in length, and is broadcast quality. It has something for everyone who likes double rifles, and African hunting. For those who are of the MS persuasion, there is even a couple charges in very close quarters, though not purposely provoked. It even has one of Ray's favorite things in it, a scoped 375 H&H double rifle The guy hunts everything from a bush buck to Rhino, and elephant, with four double rifles. A 375 H&H, and 450/400, and a 470 NE, and a 577NE. He made a couple of 200, and 250 yard shots with the scoped 375 H&H scoped double rifle, one a 60" Kudu.

A very well done film, and well worth the $29.95!

Hey,D, only a 375 DB that was scoped? The film should've been a bunch of shoots with a plethora of scoped DB's of all different calibers. I bet that Ol' Guy must be getting red ears on just the mention of this. He'll show up and make a comment or two, no doubt.

Mac,
My buddy David Guitar sent me one that he got at SCI this year. I agree it's one of the best hunting videos that I've seen. the part with the cow elephant charging, was worth the price alone. Great stuff!

NitroX,

BIG BORE PRODUCTIONS, LLC in association with SAFARI VIDEO PRODUCTIONS & IMAGEWORKS, INC This is a MARK BUCHANAN ( the client hunter in the film) , with a co-producer DAVE SONGCO.

The PHs are Johny Vivier,(RSA), and Barry Style,(Zim) and the client hunter is Mark Buchanan.

Evidently this is a privately funded film! In any event, it is a very good film, IMO!

I have several of Mark Sullivan's videos. His style of hunting is certainly unique to say the least. He says over and over in them that he wants to give the animal he's hunting the right to choose how he's going to die as he approaches wounded animals until they charge. All that said, his .600 double rifle firing a 900 grain solid that he uses to blast brain shots withing just fust a few feet of where he's standing is quite a cannon.

Yes, Ray, that Film is only lacking in it doesn't have a push feed 700 ADL, along with the 375H&H belted mag, and a scope on a double rifle! You should really enjoy that one, for sure!

Producer is a friend of mine. Name is Mark Buchanan as said earlier. He has a new video about hunting hogs called:

Boared something or other. I have the damn thing at home and cannot remember the name. It has a lot of pig killing in California, Missouri, etc. Not your normal film as Death by double rifle but he takes a lot of hogs with his doubles and some others like 375's 505 Gibbs, etc. Fun video. It is not on his website and may not be for sale but you could contact him via website and I am sure he could find some for DR Enthusists.

I have this film and I have watched it several times. It is well worth having. Mark has some very nice rifles. He shoots pretty good too.

It appears to me that the 450/400 3 1/4" seems to knock down/kill game just as good as the 470 and the 577.
I have noticed this in other videos too.
I find myself questioning my own desire for a 577 or a 600, especially after my experience with my 450 No2 in Zim last June.

Comments?

wombat,
I will answer your queation in two parts.
First the Ballistics:
I shot 2 buffalo and 3 elephant. I used one 480 Woodleigh Soft on one buff and 2 500gr Swift A frames on the other. All Softs were recovered perfectly expanded. I also shot some 480 solids into the buff as finishers.
2 cow elephants were brained, one frontal, one side. Both Solids exited the brain pan in the skull but did not exit the elephant. The frontal recovered in the spine, bullet split open on the spine. The side was at an angle, broke the atlas and axis when it exited the brain pan, and was just under the skin in the neck behind the ear.
On the bull the first 2 solids were fired at a walking elephant. The first shot hit low in the left shoulder entering low in the chest. That shot stopped his foward motion. He began to spin to his right, the second shot broke his left front leg, below the shoulder, exited and went through the trunk.
He spun around and came for us. He covered 3 or 4 body lengths, stumbles and fell down. I ran toward him and when he got up the PH said "Brain Him" so from about 60 to 70 yards I brained him with a slight quarting head shot which knocked him down. I then ran up and put 2 more shots in his head. All Solids were 480 Woodleigh's. Velocity of the 480/500 gr bullets is @ 2100 to 2150 fps [I have not chronoed my RL 15 loads yet]
I was extreamly happy with the power and performance of the 450 No2.

Now to the second part of my answer, the experience of hunting Africa with an Original British Double Elephant Gun:

PRICELESS.

Nothing can compare to hunting elephants and buffalo with a double rifle. I would not want to do it any other way.

i just received 2 videos from outdoor vision today, 1st time ordering anything from them, got the videos in about a weeks time, watch " with deady intent " has a bull elephant charge, film was ok, hell to my surprise butch searcy was even in it towards the end, the one thing i did like was that everyone used a double. the 2nd video was " In the jaws of simba " this was a tape and was better in video quality, the shooting a ok, was disapointed that they didn't used double's. I prefered the 1st video. but at the very end what a charge, and the lion made it all the way home, only to be shot off the guy. made me think, 3 guys, 3 gun, 3 shots at a charge. well it should have been 6 shots and just maybe would have saved a trip to the hospital. won't catch me in africa without my double

Yeah, it's a great cartridge but I'm not sure I'd go quite that far!
Could be nothing more than less recoil equals better bullet placement for some!

I got my copy of Death by Double Rifle yesterday. I enjoyed it a lot. While I was watching it my wife and daughter walked in and both let out an oooooooooooooooooh disgusting. My wife was supposed to be going with me and my son to africa next summer. She is now rethinking her position.
