Hi Folks

Just wondering if any of you knowledgable gentlemen would know if this shotgun action would be suitable to get a set or rifle barrels made for it, sayt in 9.3x72??

The gun I have is a 20g - I dont really know what action 'type' it is but it doesnt have a crossbolt like most doubles... can you still use this kind of action for a double rifle??

9.3x72R or 9.3x74R?

One is a lot more useful than the other ie 9.3x74R.

The discontinued Beretta 627 action, which was the same as the 625 and 626, are also the same basic action that Beretta uses for their newer 471. It's a basic, well-built, Anson & Deeley type action with double Purdey underbites; no third fastener or side clips on those models. I would suppose that if one could build a 9.3x74 using a modern action of similar design, you should be able to do it with your 627 action.

Matt,
Have you got the double rifle bug?

Does your double rifle have to be SxS or would you consider an O/U?
Just wondering if you've seen the Beretta Silver Sable O/U double rifles in 9.3x74?
They are very slim and nicely balanced, and handle well.
Come with ejectors and have removable blocks in the rib for scope bases.
A few months back I could have bought a second hand one in good nick, with fantastic wood, for a tad over 4 grand.

Thesedays it may well be cheaper and better to buy a factory built double rifle than to convert a shottie, as there are more options at good prices now than what was available a few years ago.
Especially so when talking 9.3x74.

Hi mate

Hey Ive always had the bug!! Just never acted upon it.

I know about all the other guns out there - I just wanted to assess the suitability of this action for a conversion. Really I just want someone to tell me it is not a good idea... as I explained to JH everytime I pick the gun up I just think "double rifle" and I just want to get it out of my head!!

The way I figure it - if it is suitable I might be able to get a set of barrels made for say 4-5 grand. I would rather do that and have a nice combo 20G/9.3 barrel sets than to buy another gun.

If someone says - not a good idea - then I can forget about it and concentrate on other things.

No worries, I wish I could give you an opinion on that action's suitability, but I don't know it at all.
Any chance you could put some action photos up?
Lumps, bites, action flats, bolting and breechface, would be good if you get time.

I think that might be the sort of price if you can find a gunsmith to do it. If you do, tell me whom! As I have a ".577" Greener in the safe.

As you probably know, you might be able to find a 9.3x74R S/S new or second hand for around $5G.
