Trout Season!

OK, I know you all enjoyed seeing the ice fishing photos and now it is spring trout season. My house sits 20 yards from a large stream, called brooks here in the east. My stream is fairly large at times and sometimes devastating with flooding. It is what is called a moving stone stream. It is comprised of cold, fast flowing, mountain run-off.

Yesterday I decided to take a break from logging the mountain to drop a line. The water is rather high right now so a bit murky and deep. I scoured around quickly for a few earth worms and switched reels to a very light line with a tiny plain hook suitable for brook trout. I threaded the worm on and took a position above a deep pool and flung the baited hook out. Within a minute something was on my line despit the turbulent current.

Well, the pole bent so I thought I might have snagged on a submerged tree branch. I screamed in surprise when I pulled this awesome rainbow trout up and out of the frigid water:





It was nearly 16 inches long. I baited the hook again and wham, another....



Number two was 14.5 inches long. I had no idea there were rainbow trout in the stream. While trying to land the fish I was really worried about the teeny tiny hook I had decided to use. I decided not to be greedy and called it a day. My fishing trip was 10 minutes long. It had taken me longer to get my gear out and set up!



Both fish were males, I will be grilling one tonight with home made maple syrup. I can't wait! These are the largest trout I have ever caught.

I take it your knee is healing nicely?
Good for you!


If I lived a bit closer I'd bring some black bear to simmer in port reduction to join your trout on the dinner-plate.

The knee is quite bad, it needs to be replaced eventually. Worse is the ankle on that leg just got a steroid injection to try and reduce inflamation on a nerve which isn't working. But, I am trying very hard not to let chronic pain slow me down too much.

wow ann, with fishing that good in your backyard, i would be hard pressed to go anywhere else ever.

sorry to hear about your joints, it is a surefire way of telling that you have been active throughout it, bless the memories that come from the screwed up joints.

at least that is what i try to tell myself when the pain gets to me.

Ann, I've caught and eaten a bunch of trout over the years, some of it prepared by some pretty good guides, but I've never had trout grilled with maple syrup! How is it? What's the secret? I'd love to give it a try! I'll be in the Brekenridge area of Colorado in May to do some fishing and I'd love to try something new around the campfire.

Der,

Just use the maple (make sure it is real) in addition to your usual marinade or if you grill with olive oil as a top coat something like a thin BBQ sauce. I like maple wood for smoking or the syrup for cooking with fish like trout and salmon. Cook on a lower heat as fish cooks through quickly and it is no good over done and dried out.

Wow some lovely fish. Well done.

Amazingly when it actually rains here, and after a long drought it usually rains hard and we have a big flood instead, in the debris after the flood we usually find a trout or three. Washed out of some seeded dam or creek upriver.

At the moment we would be lucky to have yabbies washed down river though when it rains again.

Love the photos. Hope the fish is delicious and fish oil digested is good for joints too. (OK I made that up but it is probably true).
