Hi all

I am planning a hunting trip and love to go to Montana. I have never hunted there, but the area is just great!

Elk and if I can bear is what´s on my wish list. But, if I can add or try for other game, I say yes thank you.

But, what outfitter to use?
I am seeking a back pack or horse pack trip, no use of atv or 4*4´s.

I seek a good old style hunting trip, do not mind walking at all. Hunting to be done by stalking.

Hope some can help me.

Vegard_dino,

I've hunted in Montana three times without a guide and on public land. I've taken a couple Mule Deer and two smaller Bull Elk. I hunted in the Judith Mountain area. I have an uncle that ranches 8,000 acres in Grassrange, MT and it's prime pheasant country! The pheasant hunting was a nice finish to some hard hunting.

Sounds like you had some nice trips!

But, can a non US go hunting alone? That will be interesting, and hard work.

Pheasant hunting you say?? Well, then my drilling will be just the right gun to go with..just as I was planning.

I'm here--drove to my office in Yellowstone this mornning---lots of elk on the way in..along with bison, ducks and geese in the streams...looks at though spring has sprung..

As to guides,,, have several I would suggest--will get the names and info forwarded on when I get back later today..

Yes they do have a bison hunt--however it is very limited and only 10% of the tags go to non-residents..I have posted the website for the Montana Fish and Game Department that will give you quite a bit of info and probably answer many of your questions..

As for Bison---There are also large ranches..fenced..but, in a large area you can hunt them in as well...the one ranch I am thinking of is about 110,000 acres...

In regards to elk and bear--all of that hunting would be free range--NO FENCES---either privatly owned land leased by the outfitter or some combination of land in how it is owned...as to the opportunity to get a bear--there are lots of bears here --and people shoot them every year during elk season..we also have a Spring Bear hunt which many of us take part in --in Fact it opens here shortly--hear some grizzly are out in the park.. while we can't hunt grizzly here in Montana, yet...they are waking up...

I will forward to you some addresses of some places I would recommend...have known them for a long time...lots of good references...and been in business for a long time as well...

If you come for elk hunting..be in shape---lots of steep mountains...elk hunting is very challenging..and most are not prepared to do what it takes to get the job done...

Vegard, A non-resident, either out of state or from out of country can hunt in Montana on their own without a guide. The hunting on public land out here can be very good, that's where I do pretty much all my hunting. But I think for what you're wanting it might be the best route to go with a good outfitter. The logistics of packing your supplies, food etc. can be bad enough from out of state but from overseas would be tough. Plus drawing a tag in the general draw for non-resident can be tough where as there is a set aside for outfitters, they cost more but it's pretty guaranteed.
I checked on some of the outfitters that I knew, but I don't know, the Northern Yellowstone herd has dropped from aprox. 19,000 down to around 6,000 so the early back country hunt isn't what it used to be.
I'll bet Ripp has some good recommendations though and would be worth checking.

I'll also send a little more info in answer to your PM.

By the way, Hey Ripp, I think bears already opened on the 15th didn't they?

Yes, I like to hunt in the forest, no fences.

But, when it comes to Bison, on a farm that is 110,00 acres..well, that is a lot of farm.

Elk is the main game, but as I have sad, if I can do it in a combination maybe not on one area, I will do so. Bear, deer, Bison, some bird shooting to.

I was also reading about some sheep/goat hunting. Interesting. Only done it here in Europe, for the Ibex.

Yes, I like a hunt to be lot´s of walking, I do that kind of hunting here, and are ready for that. I do not mind at all sleeping outdoor, if that is what we need to do, we will do it.

Well, to hunt alone is not easy, even from another state. So, yes, I will go with a outfitter. But, maybe one day, I can go alone, on a farm for deer, birds and so.

But, to go in the forest, alone, with all the food, gear, tent and so. No, I think it may be great fun, but a lot of work planning it. Maybe to much work.....

You going bear hunting now?

You are correct--it did open the 15th--been busy thinking about turkey hunting and really have not paid bears much notice...but in a few weeks should be in the thick of things as to bears...they seem to start breeding here around the mid of May...go hunting at that time...

Doesn't look like either season here tonight--got to work about 5:30 this morning and it was raining and 42F...at 11AM it was up to 56---by 12:30 it started to drop in temp and started snowing--been dumping ever since--probably have a good 6" on the ground right now..and still coming down..oh, by the way, it was 79F here yesterday...ah, yes, spring time in the Rockies...gotta love it...
