Doubles of "Rogues and Marauders"
      #13269 - 10/04/04 02:21 AM

Have been reading the book "Rogues and Marauders" written by John Dawkins an Aussie PH and ivory hunter in Africa in the '50s. So far a bloody good read.

Have been particularly impressed with the rifles he has been using. So far, a double .450, a double .333 Jeffery and even his wife shot a .400 double. Plus bolts in 8x 60mm and 9.3x62mm.

Will see if I can post some short extracts on the forum when I've finished it and go back for bits to raise as topics. Those were the days.

Nitro - Being a fellow South Australian, you probably know this anyway, but for the other members, dear old John passed away just recently at his Pheasant Shoot just out of Kingston.

I hunted there on many occasions and was fortunate to hear first hand, acounts of the adventures he had with John (Pondoro)Taylor and see some of the original photos that were subsequently published in Taylor's book "Pondoro".

He still had most of the guns that you mentioned and it was a very real priviledge to view them in his Trophy Room.

I have some recent photos of John in his Trophy Room; if you are interested, I could e-mail them for posting?

Sadly, John was severely burn't when the incubator he was tending caught fire and being in advancing years, he was never to recover.

VALE JOHN DAWKINS

Sorry to hear that another link with the past has passed away.

470rigby has sent to me the photographs. The trophy room is very East African. But we have decided to write to Mrs Dawkins to request her permission before using as well as any other material. As a mark of respect.

Chrispie - I will supply a link soon if they are still available.

Had a look at two of these doubles on Friday night.

A Jeffrey .450/.400 3" much like my own in .450 No 2 and another which was a .450 3 1/4" NE double but due to one bore being damaged has been bored out to make a .450/28 gauge Cape gun. This was a Holland & Holland.

Very nice and I hope to share them with you as the owner as given permission for me to photograph them.

Ben

Sorry, I have never taken the photos. However I believe they are still owned by the same person, so it should be possible to still organise a time to photograph.

I will have to see if I can find these photos and follow up, Unfinished business here. Maybe an opportunity for a tribute if the family is willing.
