How We Do It In The North!
      #132326 - 15/04/09 02:38 AM

Photos from some of my winter fishing adventures around my parts. Nothing like fresh fish for supper!

A friend shows me how to set a tip-up and a 19 inch pickerel takes the bait within seconds

Lake Champlain is very big and often desolate looking. It divides Vermont and New York State, on the north end lies Quebec and the St. Lawrence.

Way off in the horizon in the above photo are the Adirondak Mountains in New York State.

Some of the catch, yellow perch

Yes, I caught the biggest! We used jigs with maggots and wax worms and tip ups with live minnows. I am wearing chains on the bottoms of my boots to grip the ice.

Fractures in the ice, this day the ice was 18 inches thick, very cold weather, one must bundle up in heavy clothing. We always take hot coffee and chemical heaters for our pockets. It is very difficult to show the perspective on how large the fractures are.

Spring is here now and trout season has opened. Hopefully I can show some of those too. Gotta go catch 'em!

Ann,
Your photos are always great, and these are awesome!
Thanks for showing us your part of the world.
How does that "tipup" rig operate?

That is TOTALLY different to any fishing I have ever done!
Looks like a good deal of fun. The fish look similar to the English Redfin that we get here in Australia in our southern rivers.

Good series of photos.

Thanks for posting

Regards,

MOG

Now that is different fishing to my Alvey reel and me throwing a line in on a beach somewhere.

(What do you drink to stay warm ?, you can tell me....)

Along with winter Walleyes, Yellow Perch make for some of the best eating! Great photos!

The tip up has a reel with line on it and you can see in the one photo how it opens up with a pair of sideways legs to keep it from falling through the ice. You need a sharp auger to bore a hole and then you need a slotted spoon to sift out the ice chips. The hook is baited and you drop it down the hole and find the bottom and then bring your set about a foot off the bottom. There is a hook which attaches to a notch on the reel which when triggered causes the flag to raise. That's when you know you've caught a fish!

Normally you set up several tip ups and also have a few holes drilled to sit and jig from. If the fish are active you can be quite busy.

I love ice fishing and yellow perch. I haven't done it in years. You've wet my appetite, I might just have to try it again in the near future. Unfortunately no more this year.

The pictures are great Ann
