Getting Nervous !!!!
      #132321 - 15/04/09 01:50 AM

With my first trip to South Africa 2 weeks away (30 April), I am starting to get nervous. I hired Air2000 (Hunter Support) to handle the import Gun permits and meet&greet at the airport. I haven't received any communications from them. Is this normal? Should I have a contingency plan?

I just heard from Anne at Air2000. I owed her an appology. The emails sent to me were blocked for some reason on my end. All is set. One less thing to worry about

only thing to worry about is how to afford the next trip, have the time of your life and come back and do a write up with lots of pictures.

No need to be nervous. Just carry a bottle of Lomotil with you.

I trust you have your US paperwork in order for proof of ownership of your firearms from the US Customs office..??

You'll love it. Just remember it is Africa and things work differently (Slower) than other parts of the world. If you start to wonder what is going on, take a deep breath and wait a bit longer.

Which rifle/s did you end up deciding to take ?

Great advice. Sometimes I get a little intense. It will be good to leave the hectic work life and relax. We have taken care of all the details, so almost time to sit back and enjoy the ride.

I will be taking my Browning A bolt 375 H&H. Federal Capeshok 300gr Barnes TSX. PG on this trip. but as all of you that have been to Africa have said, it won't be the last. I have been shooting off of sticks and should be as prepared as possible.

Thanks again to all on this forum for great advice. Sure made it easier to prepare.

Just make sure that the details you've taken care of include this. I believe the form is a 4457 form, and while it only proves to US Customs that the rifle had any import duties and applicable federal sales tax (Pittman Robertson, etc.) paid on it, it is viewed as proof of leagal ownership by other countries. You will have trouble without it.

If you have it (can't hurt for scopes and binos, camera too), relax and enjoy the anticipation.

Best of luck,

JPK

Well, two weeks is enough time to allow you to pack and repack a dozen or so times! Shoot straight and enjoy your self. Be safe...

I remember my first time, and was nervous as well.

Once you get your first few days under your belt in the bush, Africa will be flowing through your veins and those nerves will settle into hot adrenaline like you have never felt before..

Good hunting!

Have a great time and don't get hung up on taking everything on your list. Take time to enjoy it and if a trophy eludes you, well that's what next time is for!

Forget that bit of advice......... the bullets travel at exactly the same speed here as they do at your home range. If nothing happens after the shot, it means you've missed.

I have all my paperwork in order. Air2000 is handling the gun Import and Anne has replied that We are all set. Per a suggestion from above, I have my scope, Binos and camera also on a US Customs form. I have all my cloths in a pile ready to be packed. Funny that I have already changed the contents of that pile daily. I am sure that will continue until the 29th.

So Shakari, if it nothing happens when I shoot, I should have the PH shoot it Oh wait, that discussion was on another thread !!!

Suddenly more excited than nervous !!!

No mate, he'd probably miss.

I'm sure you'll have a great time. My advice would be to forget worrying about things, just take it easy and as it comes and just enjoy every moment.

Just remember that Africa and African hunting is highly addictive so even if you don't get everything you ant on this trip, you'll be back sooner or later and can try again then.

My wife is the one that is getting nervous now. She figures I won't want to come back to the States. I am sure that I will start making plans for the next trip immediately. I asked the PH what I could bring as a gift for his wife? He said "My wife, what about me" When I asked what he wanted, he told me "Ranch Salad Dressing". Seems strange to me, but if that is what he wants, then that is what I will bring. Is that something that I can bring into the country ? Comes in plastic bottles, so should be able to pack in baggage.

Any advice ????

My advise, don't worry about a thing. As long as you have been to the range a bunch, everything will be fine. Set low expectations and everything will be a pleasant surprise. A day of "get the job done" shots in Africa beats driving tacks in the US any day. It is funny what they ask for, or don't in my case. I brought over a role of industrial strength duct tape, just in case I blew out a zipper on my bag, or the pelican case busted. When I pulled it out of my bag you would think it was a handful of diamonds. I had brought over hats and candy.... nope they al wanted duct tape.

If you go to Steves new website he has a section entitled "Salad dressings for Africa" you should find all you need to know there....

What was that you just said Steve ?

Mate, I think it ended in ollocks......... Salad dressing must be one of the very few things we don't cover, and I just hope Mama Shakari doesn't see this and put me to work on that as well......... I already need a 48 hour day now!!!

Luckily she's busy working on another project so I might get away with it!
