Gents,

I don't know if this should be in the gunsmithing discussion or not but here goes. I was sent this link about making parts for old cars and I immediately thought it has application for making anything that is not available anymore. Seems to me that one could remove the action from any weapon and make a perfect copy of it including the engraving. You could actually clone a copy of a priceless H&H, Rigby, Purdey etc.

Here is the link: http://widgets.nbc.com/o/47f1317f105123ad/498ebd00a62edaa0/

Am I off base here?

I think you are almost right on here.

Imagine being able to scan a Holland and Holland royal stock and duplicate the action inletting to .005" with a CNC router!
How about duplicating ANY part of ANY gun to a tolerance of .005"?

The engraving would be nearly impossible to duplicate simply because of the differing angles and cut profiles hand engraving produces. Simple engraving would be easy to replicate, but it would have a different look than hand engraving.

I think this may have to be my next toy!

Just imaging making a lost "wax" mould out of that plasic and cast a part right of it.

RE engraving,

Huvius you're on the money!

Much of what is out there isn't as it's pantographed by a CNC milling machine and acid etched as with the standard Browning and Miroku etc patterns.

Traditionally the Germans faked deep relief by dropping the background and then scratching the outlined figures to delineate muscle groups.

There has been a few german, pommy and italian stuff shown here recently that makes me chuckle somewhat. Pity I'm not that computer literate that I can photoshop to show you the stuff ups but there are many.

it is a tempting solution, sadly there is still alot of handfinishing to be done even with cnc machinery. getting the barrels on face and regulating springs to mind.

but great piece of kit, i will look into it tommorow just for kicks.

best

We have similar machines at work. They even have the capability to go directly from a cad program on the computer to a solid object.
